Orleton Manor is a fantastic example of what's possible when traditional crafts and conservation principles are at the heart of a repair project. Its new owners have assembled a team of specialist craftspeople and conservation professionals to repair this Grade II* listed property and bring it into the 21st century as a comfortable home, without damaging the surviving fabric. We were grateful for the chance to go behind the scenes to film a virtual site visit as part of our online Repair of Old Buildings course. Participants will get an unrivalled view of the work that's taken place there, and hear from the architect and specialists about the choices they've made along the way. Join us online this autumn to gain an in-depth understanding of the repair, maintenance and conservation of old buildings through a series of recorded lectures, virtual site visits and Q&A sessions. How can we meet the heritage craft skills shortage head on? In 2023, The National Lottery Heritage Fund funded a major project at Grade I listed church of St Andrew's in Soham. The project included heritage craft workshops designed to inspire young people to consider this as a career. Dale Copley, project coordinator, will be hosting a panel discussion at the upcoming SPAB-STBA Conference, where we'll hear from the team involved in designing and delivering these workshops. What has the impact been so far, and could models like this help to solve the skills shortage? Join us as we explore new ideas for old buildings at the SPAB-STBA Conference in York, Tuesday 5 November. Find out more and book at https://lnkd.in/ekQMaeGr

What if you could create a 'digital twin' of the old building you're working with? Geospatial surveys can dramatically enhance the accuracy and efficiency of repair, maintenance and retro-fit projects, by providing non-intrusive and precise documentation of the building's existing condition. Terra Measurement Limited is joining us at the SPAB-STBA Conference in York this November to share how the heritage sector can use new technology like this to help old buildings. Come along to hear how geospatial surveys have been used on projects including Wren Churches and the SPAB's Old House Project, and how this technology could benefit your projects. See the full programme and book your place: https://lnkd.in/ekQMaeGr With thanks to our conference sponsors, Ecological Building Systems and VELUX

Knowledge about how we build has always been treated with reverence. But architects of the ancient world weren't like the architects we know today. They were design specialists but often, also master sculptors, engineers, marine or military engineers or designers of public festivals. In Renaissance Italy, we start to see a shift in the background of architects, from the majority starting their careers in the building crafts, to the majority emerging from the middle and upper classes with more formal liberal arts educations. The design was no longer decided during the process of building as the emphasis shifted to the completion of the full design before construction started. By the end of the 16th century, we no longer see the architect perched on the scaffolding with chisel in hand. Instead, the profession is centred around the architectural office. The intellectualising of the profession led to a profound shift in the ownership of designs, from the artisanal view that ‘it is mine because I made it’; to the intellectual standpoint ‘it is mine because I designed it’. 📚 Read the full article by author and architect Eleanor Joliffe. https://lnkd.in/egCcWk_f 📷 16th-century building site, RIBA Collections #WorldArchitectureDay #Architect #Architecture #History
