We are no ordinary trust. We hold a unique position in the Stockport community as the provider of healthcare and we are one of its largest employers. We are an integrated provider of acute hospital and community services to the people of Stockport, as well serving the populations of East Cheshire and the High Peak in North Derbyshire. We offer a number of specialist services and play a key partnership role with Greater Manchester, Stockport and East Cheshire. With an annual budget of around £300 million we provide healthcare for residents in Stockport, East Cheshire and North Derbyshire as well as patients we treat from other boroughs in Greater Manchester who choose our services. Stepping Hill Hospital first opened in 1905 and was a military hospital during the first World War. We now employ over 5,000 staff and were one of the first NHS trusts in the country to achieve foundation trust status in 2004. We are a specialist `hub` centre for emergency and high risk general surgery, one of only four in Greater Manchester and covering the South East sector of our region. Overall responsibility for delivering services rests with the Board of Directors. We are fully committed to being transparent and implementing the principles of Being Open and Honest.

They are one of a small number of teams across England, and the only one in Greater Manchester, to be chosen for the honour. The team provide food both for inpatients across the site, and also the hospital restaurant which provides for staff, outpatients and visitors. The team showed their high standards in areas including hygiene, nutritional value, healthy options, response to patient feedback , and support and training for colleagues. They were also recommended for the diversity and choice they offer for both patients and visitors. The team organise a number of themed meals based on celebrations and events, and promote them on social media as well. They have won a number of regional and national awards in recent years recognising their high quality and standards, including Health Estates and Facilities Management Association (HEFMA) awards, North West Hospital Caterers Association awards, and the Public Sector Catering Awards. In 2022, two then-Assistant Head Chefs Erica Bell and Shelley Pearson-Smith were named as NHS Chefs of the Year following the first nation-wide competition run by NHS England. Following their presentation NHS England described the team as ‘truly exemplary’, with a true passion for the importance of food and hydration for patients. Stockport NHS Foundation Trust Support Services Manager (Catering) Erica Bell said “Everyone in the team is really enormously proud we have retained our title of ‘exemplar status’ for our services. It really is a team effort from all of us to ensure we keep up our high standards and its very heartening to be recognised in this way. We will continue to work to live up to our standards and deliver the best food for our patients, staff and visitors.”

Last week we were delighted to announce that eight #NHS charities would be receiving funding to create and enhance green spaces, improving access to nature for staff, patients and communities. One of those charities is Stockport NHS Charity, who will be using the funds to create a new Acute Frailty Unit Therapy Garden by transforming a neglected courtyard area into a relaxing space where Stockport NHS Foundation Trust patients with long-term health conditions, dementia or mobility issues can engage in outdoor activities to help their recovery. 💬 Kate Leadbeater, Charity Manager at Stockport NHS Charity, said: “Having access to a dedicated space where patients can enjoy spending time in nature away from clinical spaces is so important and we’re excited to get this project underway and see the impact it will have on staff and patients alike.” Pictured here is the Acute Frailty Unit Team at Stepping Hill Hospital with the plans for the new Therapy Garden, and the courtyard as it currently is now before its transformation. 🌱 #WorldEnvironmentDay #WorldEnvironmentDay2024
