🌍Following more than a decade of powerful growth and mainstream acceptance, sustainable investing is currently facing perhaps its greatest test. 🌍Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) has always faced resistance – usually on the grounds that politicians are best placed to tackle its issues while investors should concentrate on profit maximisation – but this has recently reached a crescendo. 🌍The opposition is greatest in the US, where investors have historically focused on ESG’s upside potential but now face mounting political, legal and financial threats to curb their sustainability activities. Companies have also come under the spotlight, with many scaling back or cancelling diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) commitments and targets. 🌍These developments have themselves met resistance, placing sustainable investing at a crossroads and raising important questions about its future. 🌍The current spotlight on ESG highlights its complexities but also strengthens our view that investing sustainably is vital for a healthy planet, thriving society and the best long-term client results. 🌍For Storebrand, which created an ESG team in 1995, the debate underlines the nuances of the issues involved but also reaffirms our approach and commitments to investing sustainably. 🌍 We are among the long-term asset managers that see sustainability as an important factor in delivering their fiduciary duty and remain steadfast on both our approach and commitment. I was invited to The University of York to give a seminar on the white papers Henrik Wold Nilsen and I have written on the use of climate data in portfolio construction. Really enjoyed the discussion, the opportunity to contribute and particularly enjoyed catching up with the brilliant Felicia Liu on her work in sustainable finance. #alwayswiththejazzhands Storebrand Asset Management UK Storebrand Asset Management

  • On 27-28 March we are proudly sponsoring the Local Government Chronicle Investment Seminar on 'Ensuring the Sustainability of the LGPS in a Rapidly Evolving World'. At Storebrand Asset Management, we believe that sustainability must be at the heart of Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) investment strategies. This was highlighted in our response to the UK government's LGPS: Fit for the Future consultation, which emphasised the role of sustainability as a core driver of long-term financial resilience and pension scheme outcomes. While much of the industry debate has focused on pooling structures and scale, we also underlined the importance of integrating sustainability into investment frameworks to ensure long-term value creation for members. With many years’ experience of providing investment services to and working closely with LGPS clients, we believe that with greater focus and alignment on sustainability at fund level, LGPS can be fit for the future and our path to a net-zero economy. Read our full response here: https://lnkd.in/ekM7nrJM We welcome further discussion—how do you see sustainability shaping the future of LGPS investments? #LGPS #PensionFunds #SustainableInvesting #AssetManagement #NetZero

Reviewing the past quarter, the theme of taking action on nature and climate challenges was high on our agenda, and a special section of our Sustainable Investment Review for Q4 2024 is dedicated to the topic. 1️⃣ Nature and climate in focus - As we detail in this edition, Storebrand was active at the recent COP16 Biodiversity Conference, championing the views of finance sector on solutions to support nature, and the role that private capital can play in those solutions. With COP follow up talks to be held in Rome at the end of this month, Storebrand Asset Management CEO Jan Erik Saugestad shares his opinion on the gap between current pathways business activity, versus what’s required for nature to be able to continue to support life and financial value creation. The section also features updates from our engagements with companies in our portfolios on climate and nature issues. 2️⃣ Active ownership- Among other highlights of the quarter, Storebrand, represented by Head of Human Rights Tulia Machado-Helland, was invited to present insights on human rights due diligence at the 13th United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights. In a related update, we offer a look at some of some of our efforts working with our peers active across the investment community, to reinforce awareness of, and methodologies for, human rights due diligence in the arms sector.  Machado-Helland is also the subject of this edition’s big interview, in which she relates her journey from early childhood in post-Franco era Spain, to the much-discussed US-Mexico border, and onto a career in sustainable investment. 3️⃣ Major exclusions- As is often the case, this quarter, we unfortunately took the difficult decision to divest from some companies, based on significant misalignment with our investment policies and standards. Among them was PDD Holdings, the parent company of internet retailer Temu. The exclusion was based on serious and systematic issues related to product safety; risk of forced labour; and potential liabilities regarding addictive service design. We also excluded the parent company of a major global palm oil supplier in Cameroon, due to risk of systematic violations of workers’ rights, among many other human rights problems. Palm oil is an ingredient present across the supply chain of virtually every industry, from foods to cosmetics, packaging, industrial chemicals and more. The new Principles for Responsible Investment of Responsible Investment 2024 report is now available! Every year, Storebrand submits a comprehensive report to the UN-backed Principles of Responsible Investment on our responsible investment frameworks and practices. This is part of our commitment as a signatory to the PRI. Storebrand ASA has been a signatory of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) since 2006. From 2019 Storebrand Asset Management has been a PRI signatory in its own right. PRI produces assessment reports based on each signatory’s disclosures, to provide feedback and support learning and development. From 2023 to 2024, Storebrand improved our scores in two out of eight modules: Policy, Governance and Strategy and Confidence-Building Measures. For the remaining six modules, we maintained a high score. Each module is scored from 0-100. Signatories that choose to publish PRI's Assessment Report must also disclose their full Transparency Report, which the assessment is based on. Both reports should be read in conjunction, as the Assessment Report only lists score per module and indicator, whereas the Transparency Reports provides full disclosure of the basis for PRI's assessment.
