I am genuinely delighted to be chairing a really important conference today on our future energy system. While the new government is captivated by silver bullet energy solutions such as nuclear, carbon capture, and hydrogen – backed by either the oil and gas industry or the trades unions or both - there’s a little known revolution in the way we generate and use energy. The association for decentralised energy ADE led by @carolinebragg will hear Talks on storing energy in the form of heat rather than in the form of electrons. And it will wrestle with problems about how people can use energy more flexibly to save them money and to protect the Grid. We have a DESNZ minister @miattafahnbulleh visiting this afternoon so hopefully she will be listening as well as talking. I have been reporting on this stuff for decades, so it’s great to see it coming out of the shadows

Initial research from Nesta on the regional suitability of heat pump installations across the UK shows that over 80% of homes in England and Wales are suitable for effective air source heat pump installations. However, shared technologies like ground-loops and heat networks could better address space challenges when replacing traditional heating systems in densely packed housing. These shared technologies play a pivotal role in decarbonising densely populated UK homes. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dZUTZ4Rr Thermal storage is essential to provide hot water for households with heat pumps and many homes do not have room for bulky hot water cylinders which need a lot of space, hampering the transition to low-carbon heating technologies. Our compact and energy-efficient PCM heat batteries overcome this barrier. Read how Thermino paired with shared ground loop heat pumps were successfully installed in Gentoo social housing in northern England without decanting tenants: https://lnkd.in/dtS9PnXj Source article Heating & Ventilation News: https://lnkd.in/dibhZxae #groundsourceheatpumps #heatnetworks #districtheating #heatpumps #thermalstorage #heatbatteries #hotwater #heating #urbanheating #ukhomes

Electric storage heaters in #socialhousing 🏠 Over 1.7 million homes in the UK are heated by electric storage heaters, and nearly a quarter million homes in social housing continue to rely on it for household heating. 🔥 However, with high electricity prices and outdated technology, traditional electric storage heaters are costly and inefficient, especially for vulnerable social housing residents. But there are modern solutions (especially where heat pump installations aren't immediately feasible), such as the high-heat retention electric storage heater models with smart controls which offer improved energy efficiency when paired with modern tariffs. For delivering low-carbon #hotwater, Sunamp’s Thermino heat batteries are a game-changing technology to complement these heating upgrades, as they're also designed to maximise off-peak tariffs, helping cut costs and freeing up space in homes. Our recent project with New Forest District Council shows how pairing Thermino ePlus batteries with modern electric storage heaters brought instant comfort and helped cut bills for social housing tenants. 🔬 We have some exciting news! Join us in welcoming Andrew Bissell, CEO of Sunamp Ltd, as he takes the stage at Energizing Day 2024 on November 19th! 🌟 In his presentation titled "Cool Crystals – From Hand-Warmers to Heating Homes," Andrew will share insights alongside Colin Pulham about the remarkable impact of academic-industrial partnerships in driving innovation. He will highlight how a deeper understanding of crystallisation processes associated with salt hydrates has led to the development of advanced Phase-Change Material (PCM) formulations. These innovative PCMs are now integral to Sunamp Heat Batteries, which are designed to balance electrical demand, store solar thermal energy, and help reduce heating bills for customers, addressing fuel poverty. As the founder of Sunamp in 2005, Andrew has been instrumental in creating sustainable heat energy storage solutions for industrial, commercial, and domestic markets. His collaboration with the University of Edinburgh has resulted in patented technology that delivers high-powered heating and cooling through over 30,000 installed heat batteries worldwide, significantly cutting energy use and carbon emissions. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover how science and industry can work together to create impactful solutions for energy storage!
