We are usually quite a modest bunch but we just couldn’t resist reposting this from Timothy Soar. Thanks so much, Tim! And thanks again to you and Isabel Allen for visiting our studio and including your interview with Jerry Tate in this month’s Architecture Today. #regenerativearchitectureindex
On Being the Change We Want to See Isabel Allen and I spent a couple of hours photographing Jerry Tate for our first Reinventing Practice portrait. Jerry, being Jerry, gave us his lunch hour—and got us lunch. Not in a grand, showy way, just in the way of a man who sees hungry people and thinks, “Well, that won’t do.” He respected his colleagues lunch time too, which is why they’re not in the photo. That tells you something, doesn’t it? So, what did I learn? Jerry believes in designing things so they don’t ruin everything. That’s it. That’s the philosophy. People need good places to live, work, and be human. The planet, meanwhile, needs a break. He understands how we can do both. He believes buildings aren’t islands. They’re part of a neighbourhood, an ecosystem, a planet. He believes people like trees, fresh air, and daylight .Take a look at Tate + Co's portfolio, this isn't marketing rhetoric, no greenwashing, this is exactly how these architects build. He believes architecture should make life better. Not just functional, but actually pleasant. You know, the way chairs are better when they’re comfortable, buildings are better when they don’t make people miserable. He believes in listening to the people who will actually use the thing you’re designing. And translating the listening into action. Sounds obvious, doesn’t it? And yet. He believes in using less carbon and more common sense. If your project is choking the planet, it’s a bad project. Again, entirely reasonable. And he has a thousand methods for getting you out of that mess. And he believes in working with great people, because big ideas don’t happen in a vacuum. I think great people probably get a kick out of working with him. Oh, and one more thing: On making it beautiful. Not in a way that trends well on Instagram, but in a way that makes people love it, care for it, and want to keep it standing long after we’re gone, he believes if you start from understanding people, it will be beautiful. And who could argue with that. So what did I learn when making the first portrait for Architecture Today Reinventing Practice? If you need a manifesto for not ruining everything, Tate & Co have got a pretty good one. Thanks Jerry, for everything https://lnkd.in/ek5zdtF5 Jerry Tate, Tate + Co Architecture Today #regenerativearchitectureindex

Thanks so much, Architecture Today, for featuring us in their ‘Reinventing practice’ article; the ongoing series of interviews with participants in the Regenerative Architecture Index (RAI). The RAI benchmarks progress in the move towards regenerative practice and projects and recognises the need for a built environment that isn’t merely reducing its negative impacts but has positive impacts for today and the long term. As a member of the RAI, Jerry Tate, Founder + Director here at Tate + Co, was interviewed by Isabel Allen, Editor at Architecture Today, in our London studio. Photography is by Timothy Soar. #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex #regenerativearchitecture #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture

Thank you Architects’ Journal and Anna Highfield for publishing news of Tate + Co’s recent planning consent win for Watergate Bay Hotel, Cornwall. The wide-ranging scheme will introduce three new buildings, a bridge and significant improvements to the public realm and pedestrian connectivity in the bay, all of which will combine to create a better space for the community and a fantastic expansion of the visitor experience. The project reinforces Watergate’s tempting offer of being a ‘ski resort on the beach’. Many thanks to Cornwall Council for helping us to get the scheme over the line, as well as the design team including Steven Abbott Associates LLP, ADAMS HABERMEHL LTD, Airey & Coles Consulting Engineers, E+M Technica, FORE CONSULTING LIMITED, Miller Goodall Ltd, Code 7 Consultants, MES Building Solutions, Royal HaskoningDHV and Karn Geoservices and, of course, our visionary client Watergate Bay Hotel. In our opinion, one of the most important documents to come out of 2024 was the pilot version of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard. Published in Autumn last year, not only does the document create a single holistic definition for a Net Zero Carbon project (both for operational and embodied carbon), but it is also supported by so many key industry bodies that it carries real gravitas. The idea is for a few early projects to ‘test drive’ this pilot guide and gather data, ready for the final version to be released in late 2025. We think this document represents an important milestone for our industry and the more of us who ‘get it’ the better our future will be. The Standard is, as you might expect, a weighty tome so Jerry Tate, Founder and Director here at Tate + Co, has written ‘A bluffer's guide’. Published in the Knowledge Hub on our website, the link below will take you to Jerry’s edit. https://lnkd.in/djzq4EQs There is a link to the full document within the piece. We are always eager to share our experience and expertise so if you have any questions, please do get in touch. Working across sectors and services within the built environment, we are sure we will be able to provide you with the answers! Our email is studio@tateandco.com We look forward to hearing from you but in the meantime, enjoy the read! #architecture #netzero #regenerativearchitecture #sustainabledesign #greenbuildings

We would like to share with you a quick update on our project at Birkbeck, University of London. The Student Wellbeing Hubs and new teaching rooms, at both the Student Central and Malet Street buildings, are really taking shape and are on course for completion in March 2025. These new spaces will provide versatile, flexible and uplifting environments for people to gather, share ideas, learn and relax. We believe projects such as this at Birkbeck are going to become increasingly important in the Higher Education sector. It is no longer about the introduction of new, ‘flagship’ buildings, rather about retrofitting what is already there; employing highly creative and clever architecture to maximise utilisation and encourage exceptional learning experiences. You can see more photos of the works in progress here. https://lnkd.in/eWTh_TKb Tate + Co crafted the concept scheme and Maris Interiors is delivering the project. Congratulations to Daniel Xuereb and the estates team at Birkbeck for creating such a comprehensive delivery strategy. ‘Can’t wait to enjoy a coffee in the new space! #architecture #interiordesign #retrofitting #highereducation #university #universitydesign #universityestates
