About us

We would like to welcome you to enjoy the peace and beauty of our Abbey. Consecrated in 1121, the church of the Benedictine Abbey of Tewkesbury survived the monastic dissolution of 1540 thanks for the generosity of the townspeople, who bought it from King Henry VIII for £453. It remains the spiritual focus of parish life today. The Abbey is of cathedral proportions and is one of the largest parish churches in the country. There has been a church on this site for over 1,200 years and, in fact, we will be celebrating our 900th anniversary in 2021. Exciting plans are already underway to ensure that the Abbey will be fit for purpose for 2021 and for many years to come. We are supported only by the people who worship here and by our many visitors, whose generosity enables us to keep this beautiful building, and the work we do here, alive and growing. Please do come and visit us soon!
