We are delighted to be able to finally confirm that the Textile Recycling Association is one of partners that will help to deliver a £4 million project to develop and pilot a pioneering fully-integrated, automated sorting and pre-processing plant for waste textiles, which could eventually divert thousands of tonnes from the waste stream each year. The Autosort for Circular Textiles Demonstrator (ACT UK) is a two-year project that will support the transition from uneconomic manual sorting of clothes and textiles that are not suitable for resale to highly-automated sorting and pre-processing, which can then be used as feedstock for existing and emerging recycling processes. The project is being supported by funding from the Circular Fashion Programme supported by Innovate UK, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), all part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The lead organisation is UKFT Association with close involvement from Circle-8 Textile Ecosystems. As well as the Textile Recycling Association the other partners that will help to deliver this project are IBM, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, PANGAIA, New Look, Reskinned, Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL), Oxfam Wastesavers, Textile Recycling International Limited, Shred Station Ltd, Worn Again Technologies, English Fine Cottons, ALEX-BEGG AND COMPANY, Camira, Manufacturing Technology Centre, University of Leeds, The University of Huddersfield and WRAP. Thanks Brett Mathews for this. I had a conversation with Marco de Gier MD SOEX TEXTIL VERMARKTUNGSGESELLSCHAFT last week when I found about this and he was very optimistic that they would find a solution to this and he hopes that they can continue trading. This highlights the incredible and increasing pressure the used textile industry is in and why any EU, UK and USA policies on the export of this much needed commodity needs to be thought through carefully. A knee jerk reaction to erroneous reports by NGO’s who may not have the best interest of the community’s that they claim to represent at heart. Reuse is still the best method for achieving our objectives and the industry that I and many like me represent have been shouting about this exact scenario for more than a decade now needs urgent action. We don’t need more promises and hope for the future. We need urgent and immediate cash injection now to save this vital infrastructure here in the UK and also globally. Urgent action is needed to kerb the flow of ultra fast fashion and brands like SHEIN Temu H&M Zara New Look et al need to be held accountable for the sheer volume of material that they are placing on the market and claiming to meet consumer demand. #reuse #circularity #textilerecyling
TEXTILE RECYCLER WHICH RUNS 'TAKE-BACK' SCHEMES FOR MAJOR FASHION BRANDS GOES INTO ADMINISTRATION: Soex Group, a leader in the recycling of old clothes and shoes, has filed for administration. This is hugely significant for the global fashion industry as German-based Soex owns I:Collect, a major facilitator of clothing take-back schemes for many of the world's leading fashion brands. I:Collect has partnered with brands such as H&M , Levi Strauss & Co. ,Columbia Sportswear Company and DECATHLON FRANCE over the years along with many others. Soex's restructuring, driven by market shifts and competitive pressure from Asia, affects 460 employees in Germany. On a personal note, I visited the huge, sprawling recycling facility of Soex around a decade ago. At that time new methods of recycling were being trialled at the plant and there was talk that take-back schemes run by brands could form the bedrock of a new circular economy for fashion. However, concern was also expressed about the increasingly poor quality of clothing entering second hand markets. With margins for second hand clothing being steadily eroded, will more and more recycling shift to Asia and the Middle East? Well done Roberts Recycling Ltd and John Roberts Simon Roberts and Paul Roberts such a fantastic use of textile waste.
♻️♻️ Float like a 🦋…sting like a 🐝 ♻️♻️ Today, we delivered our first in house produced and branded punch bag, filled with shredded non-rewearable textiles to a local gym. This will be used to support the community through the sport of boxing 🥊 Boxing offers so many physical and mental health benefits, including stress relief, improved cardiovascular health, increased strength and endurance, as well as better focus and coordination. This is an exciting step forward for our new venture, Purpose-Driven Products™️, turning waste textiles into new items that support mental well-being while championing environmental stewardship! Keep an eye out for more new products being showcased. #wastetextiles #allfillernokiller #knockoutblowforlandfill

GLOBAL TEXTILE FIBRE PRODUCTION HITS RECORD HIGH OF 124 MILLION TONNES IN 2023: New figures from Textile Exchange show global fibre output increased by 7 per cent in 2023 on the previous year. Fibre consumption continues to grow across sectors like apparel, home textiles, and footwear. Virgin fossil-based synthetics saw a rise in market share, increasing from 67m tonnes in 2022 to 75m tonnes in 2023. Cotton and recycled fibres, meanwhile, faced a decline in market share. Polyester remains the dominant fibre, representing 57 per cent of total global fibre production. Projections show fibre production could reach 160 million tonnes by 2030 if current trends continue. Global fibre production has now more than doubled since 2000 despite the rise of sustainability efforts and initiatives in fashion since that time. The figures were announced during New York Climate Week which - ironically - has a large presence from the global fashion industry.
