Happy to be featured in The Media Leader, where I’m covering Google’s bombshell decision to deprecate third-party cookie (TPC) deprecation and replace it with a user choice mechanism. The move reminded me of a famous 1956 chess match when 13-year old Bobby Fischer sacrificed his queen to gain a better position and ultimately checkmate his opponent, an experienced chess grandmaster ♟️ ↳ The Blunder: Google had agreed with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) not to deprecate TPCs until the Privacy Sandbox (PS) had been tested and widely adopted by the industry, de facto giving its competitors veto power ↳ The Queen Sacrifice: as it becomes clear that ad tech is rejecting the PS, Google decides to sacrifice its prerogative to deprecate TPCs and instead makes it easier for users to disable TPCs ↳ The Knight movement: just like chess knights are used to bypass the opponent's defences, Google's move is bypassing many competition concerns. The CMA has not yet accepted this proposal, but it will be hard to challenge a measure that gives users more transparency and control. ↳ The Stopwatch: the Queen Sacrifice brings the whole initiative back into Google's hands and will likely expedite the decline of TPCs. ↳ The Checkmate: A user-friendly choice mechanism could drastically reduce TPC usage, potentially mirroring the drop seen with Apple’s App Transparency Tracking (ATT). Same(ish) end, different means. The size of the impact will depend on these variables: 🌐 The scale of the controls: browser-wide vs domain-specific 🍪 The scope of the controls: TPCs vs all cross-site tracking 📴 The options: reject/accept vs a three-option choice (TPCs, Privacy Sandbox, No cross-site tracking) ✍ The language used: aggressive ('tracking') vs soft ('personalisation') Finally, I think that the decision will end up throwing the Sandbox under a bus for various reasons, but potentially open the door to more privacy-enhancing alternatives.
