This first social will focus primarily on Cancer Platform and where we are at in developing the digital tool that aims to transform cancer outcomes for all. Back in June, Ricki Fairley from Touch, The Black Breast Cancer Alliance and Nina Lopes discussed the racial disparities in breast cancer that have impacted them both, in the UK and US, on the Cancer Platform Presents podcast, What's Next: Nina Lopes. Yesterday a report from the American Cancer Society offered insight into this subject, finding that:  - Black women have a 38% higher death rate from breast cancer compared to white women - This is despite having a 5% lower incidence rate.  - And at every single stage of breast cancer, Black women have the lowest survival rate. These are our principles for making AI products more human. ↓ Our Exec Director of AI, Nayan J., and Product Principal, Jivan Virdee, recently spoke at the Oxford Machine Learning Summer School (OxML). They shared our learnings from building AI-powered healthcare products like Cancer Platform and our new proof of concept, Sproutiful, a smart gut health companion we built in just 8 weeks. Key principles: 1. AI is a technology, not the product. Define a clear use case before integrating AI into products. Remember that AI isn't the solution to every problem. 2. AI can foster emotional connections with users. Use AI to understand the user’s intrinsic motivations and tailor experiences to build trust and engagement. 3. AI has real-world consequences. Prioritise human-centred design and focus on helping users meet their goals rather than endlessly engage with the app. Be mindful of the environmental impacts of the AI models that you use (or train).
