This International Women’s Day, Elders reiterate their call for a woman to be the next head of the United Nations. Women have fought for the right to vote, to work, to lead. But the gender gap remains, and we need to break the glass ceiling at the highest level. #IWD2025, #MadameSG, #1for8billion

Africa can lead the way to reforming the United Nations. Today, we're sharing Johnson Sirleaf's piece "As the UN turns 80, Africa can lead the way on Security Council reform." In it, The Nobel Prize recipient and member of The Elders Foundation makes the case as to why reform is needed to address Africa's lack of representation on the Security Council - a historical injustice. Sirleaf reminds us that the only reform to the UN - council expansion in the 1960s - originated from the UN General Assembly. In order to reform, African countries in the General Assembly - as well as nations from all around the world - can once again effect change. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eksNy2rS #UNCharterReform

The world cannot reward Russia's aggression. Any peace negotiations must include Ukraine if justice is to be delivered. Juan Manuel Santos says: “Three years on from Russia’s full-scale invasion, the Elders reaffirm our solidarity with the courageous Ukrainian people and President Zelenskyy as the country’s democratically elected leader. The conflict is entering a critical phase. Ukraine’s direct participation in any peace talks is absolutely essential. A settlement negotiated by the USA and Russia alone cannot deliver the justice, accountability and security guarantees that Ukraine deserves after three years of Russian aggression and atrocity crimes. Other European countries also need to be involved. The whole world will pay a terrible price if Russia’s crime of aggression is rewarded. Ukraine’s allies in Europe and beyond must stand firm and insist on a credible path to inclusive peace talks, where sovereignty and international law are paramount.” https://lnkd.in/eF3rjuhk
