The National Lottery Community Fund

We are thrilled to share that WeMindTheGap has been awarded funding over the next five years from The National Lottery Community Fund, helping us to continue our important work supporting young people in the North West of England and North Wales, who have fallen through the gaps for many different reasons, and are not in education, employment or training. The £4.9 million funding over five years from The National Lottery Community Fund will sustain and help grow WeMindTheGap programmes, supporting our ambition to reach over 15,000 young people at a cost of £12 million. Thank you so much to The National Lottery Community Fund for recognising how important our work is in developing young people and enabling us to continue to deliver such vital services in the community. Our CEO, Ali Wheeler,  said “This funding represents a huge milestone for the charity and a clear recognition of the difference we are making to young people’s lives. The ongoing support from The National Lottery Community Fund is invaluable, as it gives us the flexibility to continue to grow, adapt, and deepen our impact year on year. This funding will help us build on our community model, and reach even more young people who deserve better. As we shared in February, from today (1 April) applications to Reaching Communities will need to meet new priorities to help deliver a fairer, stronger, and more resilient future for communities across England. Reaching Communities will now prioritise projects which support places, people or communities experiencing poverty, disadvantage or discrimination, and which meaningfully involve communities in steering the project.   Applications will also be expected to strongly demonstrate their fit with one of our four community-led missions. We’re particularly interested in projects that take positive climate action, for those least engaged with the environment – with an emphasis on promoting access to quality natural spaces. This week is #FoodWasteActionWeek and we’re celebrating community-led projects helping to reduce food waste – in turn saving money and the planet. 🌍 One way to curb the 6.4 million tonnes of food and drink wasted by UK households each year is by composting, with Birmingham now set to become a centre for composting thanks to #NationalLottery funding. 🍌🍎 Incredible Surplus CIC has received over £1 million to set up compost villages across the city to help combat the 6.4 million tonnes of food and drink waste is generated annually from UK households. That’s 341kg of food waste each year for a typical household of four – or the weight of a grand piano! 😲 Mita, a volunteer at Incredible Surplus CIC, said: “Before I used to throw out all the household rubbish, now I collect the leftover food and vegetables peelings in a pot and make compost. I don’t buy any compost at all now - it’s all homemade. Last year I used it to grow courgettes, marrows and potatoes!    “Being part of Incredible Surplus has been incredibly rewarding and taught me so much about the impact of food waste and how I can contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
