👨🏫 Happy World Tutor's Day! 👩🏫 To honour tutors everywhere, we asked some TOS tutors what they think makes an incredible educator. 💭 Here’s what they said… 🌟 Understanding the individual Be curious about every student and how they learn. Ask yourself: how can I connect with this student to facilitate their unique learning process? 🌟 Being a mentor Lead students on a learning journey, help them to discover their ‘element’, and support their growth inside and outside the classroom. 🌟 Cultivating a growth mindset Use positive reinforcement to encourage students to see challenges as opportunities for growth. Help them understand that effort and persistence lead to improvement. On World Tutors’ Day, we celebrate and thank all the educators who do all of this and more. 🔍 Looking for tutoring opportunities? DM us or email your CV to tutors@theonlineschool.com. #WorldTutorsDay #Mentorship #GrowthMindset

💫 Did you know we inherited 6 week summer holidays from the Victorians? Extended summer holidays weren’t designed for travel or enriching summer programmes (like our Start-up School - reply below for details!). 👦 👧 Children in rural areas were expected to work in the fields for a successful harvest. But that’s not the only thing we’ve inherited from school in the 1800s. Back then, children didn’t learn the skills they needed to flourish as individuals, citizens, or innovators. This wasn’t the purpose of education in an industrialising, manufacturing-based economy. So, schooling was rigid, brief, and generalised. ✍ Rather than an adaptive learning journey designed to make you a more creative, critical thinker. We’ve come a long way, but haven’t fully let go of traditional schooling. 💻 This is where hybrid and flexible schooling models come in. We’re grateful to be part of a community of educational pioneers committed to reinventing the system to be more flexible, accessible and relevant. For us, this means facilitating future skill development at your own pace and place. ⁉ What would you value most in a reinvented education system?

Building the go-to administration support service for UK startups | Matching founders to our trusted Virtual Assistants to achieve scale

Todays instalment of The Knowledge Nook is co-founder of The Online School Carl Morris!📚 Carl’s innovative platform makes education more relevant, flexible, and accessible by blending digital and physical learning spaces and empowering students to take ownership of their education. Read on to find what his advice is when building a tech Startup. I asked him what his golden piece of advice for others starting out is🥇: #1) Guarantee you have the expertise, either internally or externally 🟡🟡Carl had a huge vision for his platform and conceptually it seemed simple, but they were building from the ground up. Neither he or his co-founder were in tech, so they went straight into building V1 of the product for investors, spending a lot of money doing so. It didn’t include the features they wanted, it didn’t look right, but they were pitching the big ideas as the selling point. The game changing moment for Carl was one of his investors bringing in a tech-advisor who said “why have you jumped into development without consulting a UI/UX team first?”; that made all the difference. Even if you aren’t a tech startup, make sure you have all the expertise covered, either internally or from external advisors because that one comment changed the game for Carl. 🟡🟡 #2) Not everyone is the right hire for a Startup - hire for culture, not vision I then asked him about a challenge he faced building The Online School, and how he overcame it: The big challenge that stood out was the hiring process. Because of their mission to widen access to education, every potential hire was so enthused to get going and make a difference! But in reality Startups are messy, non-linear and the creative direction changes a lot, people have to be open to this and if not then feelings can be hurt. One of his advisors said “hire slow, fire fast”. Carl was experienced in hiring into established businesses which are a far cry from a startup, and he found they were hiring for vision, and not culture. Vision and culture are two different things, in a Startup aim for culture, because if you get that hire right it will reduce you having to fire, go back to the drawing board and hiring again which wastes time and money. Vision will get you phenomenal people but they need to be able to handle the culture. Speaking with Carl about the profound mission The Online School has and the changes they’re already making was an incredible joy. His passion, driving determination and overall knowledge is what puts them ahead of the curve in this space, and I can’t wait to see what they achieve. For links to find Carl, check the comments!
