  • Climate change consequences, such as rising temperatures and increased rainfall, can lead to negative health outcomes. For instance, experiencing flooding can raise the risk of depression and anxiety as well as the spread of diseases while heat stress can pose significant dangers to vulnerable populations, including those already facing social inequalities and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. These links were only included on the COP agenda for the first time at COP28 in 2023. Our friends at Green Alliance launched two reports at a conference funded by Wellcome Trust yesterday, read about them via their original post below with links to the reports available in the comments below 👇 #ClimateChange #COP29 #ClimateEmergency

Yesterday we launched two reports on the links between health and climate change at a conference funded by Wellcome Trust. Here's some highlights 👇 Blanche Shackleton, our strategy and partnerships director, opened by the first panel by discussing the far-reaching impacts of climate change on health and health services, leading to a discussion on cross-sector collaboration. 🏛️ Rosa Hodgkin, researcher at Institute for Government, noted that we need to emphasise the monetary savings to 10 Downing Street and HM Treasury of early action, and the need for specific objectives to achieve cross-departmental success (eg, increasing electric vehicle uptake to reduce air pollution and improve health). 🩺 Tamsin Ellis, GP and director of Greener Practice, highlighted the need for better support and resources for medical professionals working on climate issues. 🧠 Emma Lawrance, mental health lead at Institute of Global Health Innovation, spoke on the mental health impacts of climate change and the need for integrated support beyond typical healthcare (eg, insurance for farmers to reduce weather-related stress). Shaun Spiers chaired the second panel on health and climate adaptation, focusing on London. 📉 Emma Howard Boyd CBE, chair of London Climate Resilience Review and ClientEarth, stressed the urgency of preparing for extreme weather and the importance of proper adaptation to protect investments. 👥 Mete Coban MBE, deputy mayor of London for environment and energy Greater London Authority, emphasised the need to view climate action through the lens of social, racial and economic justice, saying "so many people in my community have been impacted by climate change but don't even know it". Alistair Strathern MP, chair of APPG Environment , then spoke on Labour's ambition to lead on climate and health, and the importance of listening to impacted individuals and experts. He added "It's my job to make sure this gets it fair share of the hearing and I look forward to this being the first of many conversations with you all". Roz Bulleid chaired the final panel on climate adaptation and its health benefits. 🔍 Sophie O'Connell, senior policy adviser, provided an overview of the reports and the recommendations to government within them. 📍 Emer OConnell, public health lead for planning, climate and resilience at GLA Group Public Heath Unit emphasised the need for data to motivate governmental action. ❤️🩹 Subashini M, medical director at Aviva, called for government direction on minimum action requirements and highlighted the monetary benefits of early action. Thank you to all who attended and contributed to the discussions on this often overlooked aspect of climate change. • Last week trustee, Susannah Baker MBE went to a Roundtable, as an off-shoot to the The Labour Party conference, with @RtHonSeema Malhotra MP (Minister for Migration and Citizenship) in attendance, to talk about the need to expand and grow safe routes for refugees to come to the U.K. Susannah spoke about Community Sponsorship on behalf of the Community Sponsorship Alliance and us at The Pickwell Foundation "Our sleeves are fully rolled up. There is much to do, but things are looking positive and possible for a future with, yes, controlled migration, but more care, more intelligence and without it needing to cost the earth in doing so. In fact, it could even add to our economy whilst doing good" Read about her trip via her original post below. #CommunityLedWelcome #TogetherWithRefugees #SafePathways #Migration

Director for asylum and refugee work. Board of Trustees Member at The Pickwell Foundation.

Sunday was an early start, a 10-hour-trip after a 50th party, and all for just 2 hours in Liverpool. However, I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I went for a Roundtable, as an off-shoot to the The Labour Party conference, with Rt Hon Seema Malhotra MP (Minister for Migration and Citizenship) in attendance, to talk about the need to expand and grow safe routes for refugees to come to the U.K. I had the pleasure of presenting alongside esteemed colleagues who I admire greatly. Together, Dr Wanda Wyporska, FRHistS (CEO, Safe Passage International), Enver Solomon (CEO, Refugee Council), Khusbu Patel (Interim Executive Director, International Rescue Committee U.K), Mubeen Bhutta (Director of Policy, Research and Advocacy, British Red Cross) and Sami Gichki (Young Leader at Safe Passage International), we presented the case for new ideas and improvements regarding family reunion, the U.K. Resettlement Scheme, a humanitarian visa pilot and I (of course) talked about Community Sponsorship on behalf of the Community Sponsorship Alliance and The Pickwell Foundation I made reference to my invitation to the Minister to visit us in Devon to see our work, meet with our North Devon Council Ian Roome MP, and enjoy a cream tea. ‘The cream tea’ then kept coming up for the rest of the meeting! In such a serious conversation, these were moments of levity. The Minister told me she had ‘already heard about Devon, many times’ and that she would like to come but ‘will be buying my own cream tea’. It was excellent to also have Kevin Bonavia MP who Co-Chairs the APPG for Refugees in attendance and sharing his thoughts too. Our sleeves are fully rolled up. There is much to do, but things are looking positive and possible for a future with, yes, controlled migration, but more care, more intelligence and without it needing to cost the earth in doing so. In fact, it could even add to our economy whilst doing good.

  • This Summer the Taliban published a host of new “vice and virtue” laws, these ‘Frightening’ prohibitions for women include: Completely veiling their bodies – including their faces – in thick clothing at all times in public to avoid leading men into temptation and vice. Not directly looking at men they are not related to by blood or marriage. They can no longer be heard singing or reading aloud, even from inside their houses. Prior to the new laws, women and girls were already stopped from attending secondary school; banned from almost every form of paid employment; prevented from walking in public parks, attending gyms or beauty salons. Earlier this year, the Taliban also announced the reintroduction of the public flogging and stoning of women for adultery. Last month, in a hotel on the outskirts of Tirana, Albania, a group of courageous and extraordinary Afghan women gathered together for a summit discussing the horrific human rights abuses women in Afghanistan are facing at the hands of the terrifying Taliban regime. Katy Woolley, our Afghan Resettlement lead shared: "I've just listened to this podcast and it's made me really emotional. I really recommend. It's really harrowing but uplifting about the women who are left in Afghanistan and how the Taliban have upped everything. To now public stoning, to women can no longer speak too loudly in their own homes as other men outside might hear. There are literally being shut out of life. It is a stark reminder of what our Afghan communities families are living through right now with their sisters, aunties, mothers and grandmother's all facing still living under Taliban rule. The International community are pushing for "Gender apartheid" to be recognised as crime under International law for these Afghan women. Their voices need to be heard". • Legal challenges against the #Rosebank oil drilling project have recently been given the green light, meaning Greenpeace UK and our friends at Uplift can both make their cases to prove that the projects emissions were unlawfully ignored. If this project goes ahead it will not only work against our Net Zero targets but also set a bad example for other nations globally over the start of new oil drilling projects and the use of non-renewable energy over sustainable alternatives for #PeopleAnd Planet For updates on this and much more subscribe to our mailing list - https://tr.ee/ySHvUw9_08 Stay up to date on the Rosebank developments as they unfold here - https://lnkd.in/gxRp98su and don't forget to join their campaigns! #CliamteEmergency #RenewableEnergy #NetZero

  • During #BlackHistoryMonth, we stand with those reclaiming narratives of resilience, courage, and contribution in the face of displacement and migration. Let’s honor the enduring spirit of Black communities worldwide, celebrating their rich history and culture while advocating for justice and equity. We must encourage everyone to do the work: Contact your children's schools and ask what are they doing to educate, support and celebrate diversity, culture and the history that has helped shape the world we live in today. Support Black creatives and storytellers. Immerse yourself in music, films, podcasts and art. Write to your MP's and call for tougher consequences to those who target Black and migrant communities. Stand in solidarity against deep-rooted institutional racism and actively be part of the change that is still so desperately needed. Support charities like us by volunteering and collectively advocating for the communities we support, helping them feel welcomed and connected. #ReclaimingNarratives

  • A huge win for #PeopleAndPlanet We recently wrote about this legal challenge here - https://lnkd.in/eQKy48p6 Thank you to everyone involved in this decision being overturned, it’s now for the UK Government to come to take a stand and not allow this mine to be built! Thank you Friends of the Earth and South Lakes action for all you hard work in and out of court. #ClimateCrisis #ClimateEmergency

We won! 🙌 Planning permission for the UK's first deep coal mine in 30 years has been quashed. The court agreed with Friends of the Earth and South Lakes Action on Climate Change that the lifetime emissions of the Whitehaven mine (mostly from burning coal) weren't properly considered, and its approval was unlawful 🎉 The government will now have to decide whether to allow the mine to be built, taking into account its full climate impact. It conceded that planning permission had been unlawfully granted and withdrew its defence against our legal challenge ahead of it being heard, so here’s hoping we’re reporting on some more positive climate news soon! Take action today by adding your name to our petition calling for no new oil, coal or gas projects: https://lnkd.in/ecHcjW6B
