Hospitals and Health Care
We are the only membership body for ophthalmologists in the UK.
About us
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists champions excellence in the practice of ophthalmology. We are the only professional membership body for medically qualified ophthalmologists and for those who are undergoing specialist training to become ophthalmologists. The College acts as the voice of the profession, we set the curriculum and examinations for trainee ophthalmologists, provide training in eye surgery, maintain standards in the practice of ophthalmology, and promote research and advance science in the specialty. Ophthalmologists are at the forefront of eye health services because of their extensive training and experience in the area. As an independent charity, our policies are based on impartial, clinically based evidence. We work with leaders and decision-makers in the eye health sector, such as government health departments, commissioning bodies, and patient and charity organisations to help shape eye services for the benefit of patients.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) reposted this
New stats show that there will be a 27% increase in the number of people living with sight loss by 2035. That’s 2.8 million people who will experience sight loss in their lifetime. Some key factors include: - An increase in life expectancy, - An aging population, - Demographic changes. Prevention and early diagnosis are key. Eye health must be prioritised in all parts of the UK. In England, we’re calling on the Government to develop a National Eye Care Plan to fix delays in eye care and stop avoidable sight loss. Eye tests every 2 years are important for everyone – even when there is no change in your vision. Tests can pick up early signs and can help preserve sight. They can also detect other conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. #WorldSightDay [Image description: ‘UK Government must prioritise eye health and fix delays in eye care.’ A yellow graphic with bold, black font. ‘Prioritise eye health’ and ‘fix delays’ are highlighted in a black box with white font.]

Did you know we also run courses outside of our London site? We ran a basic Phacoemulsification course recently at the Hull Institute of Learning and Simulation. Haag-Streit loaned an EyeSi simulator for the course, which was led by Martin Rescorle. #Courses #Ohthalmology
