Wolverhampton has become one of the only hospitals in the country to perform less invasive heart bypass surgery, and is aiming to offer this service as regular service to patients. LGBTQ+ parents and their children can now enjoy their own stay and play group in Wolverhampton – believed to be the Black Country’s first. Proud Parents was established by Sunita Banga, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Lead Midwife at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, and the City of Wolverhampton Council. The group was born from demand for a post-natal group from the Pride in Pregnancy group, which started in July 2023 for LGBTQ+ pregnant parents. “It’s important to listen to what the families of Wolverhampton want and I’m proud to make this happen,” said Sunita. A golden servant of Wolverhampton healthcare with six decades of NHS service is retiring, insisting: “I’d do it all again”. John Harris, Legal Services Manager at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, is finally putting down his pen after 60 NHS years, 56 in Wolverhampton. Now 81, John – which he insists on being called despite being known universally as ‘Mr Harris’ – still starts work at New Cross Hospital at 6.30am and never works from home. John joined The Mid Worcestershire Hospital Management Committee – now Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust – on 14 December 1964, working for the Hospital Secretary, based in Bromsgrove General Hospital. Wolverhampton has recruited the first patient in the UK to a new trial investigating the prevention of anaemia in pregnancy. The Primary prevention of maternal ANaemia to Avoid preterm Delivery and other Adverse outcomes (PANDA) Prevention, aims to recruit 11,020 women. The aim of PANDA, a programme which has been running for four years, is to see if by preventing anaemia, babies can be prevented from being born too small and too early and to stop some stillbirths. PANDA Prevention is the main trial of the programme and it aims to understand the real effects of giving low-dose iron supplements during pregnancy to prevent anaemia and its harmful complications. Three “inspirational” Wolverhampton healthcare heroes have been crowned Black Country award winners at a regional ceremony. Charlotte Colesby won the inaugural Allied Health Professionals’ (AHP) Council’s Excellence Award for Regional/National Impact, Charlotte Shillito won the AHP Workforce Transformation Award, and Jen Cartwright is the Black Country AHP Council Award winner. Charlotte Colesby is Deputy Chief AHP/Speech and Language Therapy Services Manager, Charlotte Shillito is a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, and Jen is Education Programme Lead on the Integrated Care System (ICS) People Programme. More than 200 people flocked to a history fair in Wolverhampton, with many signing up to an oral history project on healthcare. Items – including an early version of a nasal cannula – were displayed at the fair at the Wolverhampton City Archive in the Molineux Hotel Building.
