About us

The Arts Foundation is a registered charity that supports individual artists and creatives in the UK with unconditional financial fellowships through the Arts Foundation Futures Awards. Since 1993 the Arts Foundation has awarded over £2 million to the most promising artists in the UK at a pivotal moment in their careers to enable them to concentrate on their creative development, experiment, and realise their artistic potential. The annual Arts Foundation Futures Awards provides five transformative £10,000 fellowships, with all shortlisted artists receiving £1,000 towards the development of their artistic practice. Each year the awards focus on broad and innovative art forms across Craft, Design, Film, Literature, Music, New Media, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts. The vital contribution of the Arts Foundation Futures Awards to the arts in the UK is demonstrated by its past Fellows, many of whom are regarded as contemporary pioneers and have gone on to become leaders in their respective art forms, including: Wayne McGregor (1994), Alice Oswald (1996), Sarah Kane (1998), Asif Kapadia (2001), Ali Smith (2001), Rufus Norris (2002), Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (2006), and more recently, Simon Fujiwara (2009), Alice Birch (2014), Hollie McNish (2015), Evan Ifekoya (2017), Holly Hendry (2019), Onyeka Igwe (2020), Klein (2020), and Bethany Williams (2020).

Author Ali Smith (Short Story Writing Fellow, 2001) launches her new novel, Gliff: A Novel, at the Southbank Centre in conversation with writer Eley Williams. With a nod to the traditions of dystopian fiction, a glance at the Kafkaesque, and a new take on the notion of classic, Gliff is a moving and electrifying read, a vital and prescient tale of the versatility and variety deep-rooted in language, in nature and in human nature. Keep an eye out for ‘The Ministry of Time’, a new TV drama based on Kaliane Bradley’s debut novel of the same name, adapted by Alice Birch (Playwriting Fellow, 2014) for the BBC. The six-part series follows a newly established governmental organisation called The Ministry of Time that takes "expats" from various periods — ranging from a French Revolution widow to a Black Plague patient — and drops them in our modern era for a new chance at life. The series will star Aimee Lou Wood, Rebecca Hall, and Joseph Fiennes. Alice says: “I'm so thrilled to be adapting Kaliane's beautiful, funny, joyful, moving, intelligent book with the BBC and A24. Reading it was an exhilarating, thrilling and heartbreaking experience and I'm so excited to bring this story to the screen.” The Ministry of Time is scheduled to be released on the BBC this Autumn. Introducing Sinta Tantra, Jury member for The Arts Foundation Futures Awards 2025 for Visual Art! Sinta Tantra is interested in the interplay between colour, light, geometric and organic forms. Her paintings and installations are created in response to time and space, and are designed to subtly transform throughout the day, offering shifting moods and perspectives. Whether produced on a monumental scale or precisely rendered on canvas, her compositions employ a universal visual language that shifts the focus away from meaning to the emotional and physical experience of the artwork. Born in New York to Balinese parents, Tantra grew up in London where she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (2003) and the Royal Academy Schools (2006). Her Balinese heritage is central to her practice both in terms of her collaborative working processes and her meditative approach to painting. Tantra’s work has been exhibited at numerous international biennials, art fairs and in group exhibitions such as A New Paradise at the Saatchi Gallery in London (2022), Light in Retrospective at ISA Art and Design, Jakarta (2022), Small is Beautiful (2022) at the Flowers Gallery, London, Framer Framed (2020) in Amsterdam, the Karachi Biennale (2019), the Folkestone Triennial UK (2017) and the Liverpool Biennial UK (2012). Tantra’s work is part of the Government Art Collection, the Benetton Foundation collection, Museum MACAN, the Louis Vuitton collection and other private international collections. We are thrilled to have Sinta’s expert artistic eye and experience on this year’s jury! https://lnkd.in/edHnd3vn The Visual Art Award is supported by the Yoma Sasburg Estate.
