China-Africa summit 2024: the tactics on both sides. When will African leaders learn their lessons ⁉️ African nations seek more flexible approach from Beijing to relieve crippling ‘debt distress’ Leaders of African countries will head to China this week for the ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit, where they’ll meet President Xi Jinping to discuss strengthening economic relations. The relationship between China and Africa has been a largely uneven one in favour of the former. The “lack of an African strategy” has left “imbalanced terms of trade”, said Ndzendze, with China enjoying a growing trade surplus due to the unchanged terms of the trade arrangement. But China has also faced criticism for its “free flowing” funding that, despite having provided much-needed construction, has been “saddling countries with unsustainable debt” that has left them under Chinese political influence, said CNN. Countries including Ghana, Zambia and Ethiopia have suffered particular “debt distress” under Chinese financing, said the BBC. Beijing has offered little relief for countries struggling to repay it, instead simply delaying repayment to maintain its position of power. The issue of debt sustainability is likely to be a key talking point of the summit. However, there is little expectation of China becoming more flexible in provisioning debt relief for heavily burdened countries. Instead, it is likely to focus on shifting to “small yet beautiful” investments as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, targeting projects with “smaller budgets and environmental or social impact”, said CNN. Despite China’s relationship with the continent as a whole coming under the spotlight at the summit, it is often individual countries that negotiate deals with Beijing, weakening their “bargaining power”, said Theo Neethling, from the University of the Free State in South Africa, at The Conversation. Taking a stance as a bloc and being able to “unite and adopt a more coordinated approach” would strengthen each nation’s position, but a lack of unity will continue to allow China to “dictate the agenda”. Let’s take a moment to appreciate our esteemed followers. Thanks for the #1kmark. We appreciate and love you all. While we reassure you of our poise to entrench democracy in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. And get rid of Greedy politicians from power. So we see more investment that promotes social enterprise where technology is used to entrench democracy and bring good governance close to the people. Africans CM need to use technology to advance democracy where the people are able to hold politicians accountable and demand better governance. By rating and review politicians performance from their party manifesto. That way the people are better informed at making decisions and choices in the next elections cycle. Unfortunate moments in Nigeria 🇳🇬. With exponential inflation and cost of living with poverty and unemployment not to talk of insecurity. In our opinion the biggest problem in the country is the lack of ’Rule of Law’. The level of lawlessness in the country is staggering. In many African countries, there seems to be a tendency for people wanting things for the sake of ‘possession’, as an end in themselves, rather than to utilize them as a means to extract additional or greater benefits. I have met many African officials, businessmen and rural leaders who would say that once they receive investments and factories, everything else will take care of itself. The coercive force used to manipulate labour turned the economies into monocultures, and Gareth Austin notes that under colonialism ‘African societies ceased being self-sufficient as they began to import manufactured goods and basic foodstuffs, while exporting raw materials. To this day, the perceived comparative advantages of many African economies are little more than their colonially derived specializations, even though export agriculture had begun to develop in late pre-colonial times’. African countries were decolonized, up until now, they have continuously missed opportunities and faced dilemmas regardless of how international dynamics and environment have evolved, to come to a state of ‘African paradox’. During the early nation-building period, the goal of African states was to build autonomous states, but they faced strong counterforces holding them back or even driving them backwards towards structural and psychological dependency. Meanwhile in many African countries the government is increasing the price for passport processing and production. In the name of inflation and corruption. Claiming the cost of production is high. Nigeria politicians will never put its people in mind first to good governance and accountability. But will follow their own greed and corruption nature first. We have governors who go to China on tours, and what do they come back with? MoUs on debt. China will lend you $1.8 billion to build light rail. Your citizens will ride on the train, but in a place like northern Nigeria, in states like Kano or Katsina, where are the people going to? They’re not heading to industrial estates to work, to well-equipped schools, or to Modern mechanized farms. You borrow money from China to invest in trains so your citizens can ride on them to attend weddings, parties, and naming ceremonies. There are no factories to work in. So, where or how will you get returns on this investment? How will you pay back the loans? We have a leadership problem. We need to choose leaders who are competent to do the job, whether they come from our community or not. Therefore, Welcome To The Future Of Democracy In Nigeria.
