Four out of five CLA members say that their businesses rely on Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes. 🌾 A recent CLA survey of 250 members has revealed how vital the UK Government's ELMs are to the survival of rural enterprises. In the poll, 80% of respondents said they 'strongly agreed' or 'agreed' that payments through the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) and Countryside Stewardship (CS) schemes are critical to ensure their businesses stay viable. The potato growing industry has faced a number of challenges in recent years. In fact, it's said that since the 1970s, the UK’s self-sufficiency in potatoes has declined from 100% to 65% - from 19,000 farms to less than 1,000 today. 🥔 The Robson family in Northumberland is one of the remaining farms that has weathered this storm.
