👀 EYES ON BIG ENERGY ⚡   There are 11,330 satellites floating above Earth, a figure that grows by a few thousand every year.    About a third of these are now space junk. But a new one – fired into orbit last Friday – is significant.    Tanager-1 is about the size of a mini-fridge, and has a simple mission – to check how honest big energy is being about methane. This potent gas is 80 times more effective than CO2 at trapping heat in the atmosphere, and Tanager-1 will track emissions down to the nearest 50m, pointing its eye at major oil and gas fields. The project is run by non-profit Carbon Mapper, and is the second such satellite in space, after the Environmental Defense Fund’s MethaneSAT launched in March.   These eyes in the sky will monitor pipeline leaks and gas flares from power plants, which account for more than 25% of all methane emissions. Publicly available data will give scientists the truest picture yet of how much methane is escaping, and exactly where it is coming from.   History tells us that we can't rely on those most responsible for emissions to be entirely open about their climate impact. 🚜 How the UK is changing farming 🚜   In 2020, the British government announced a complete overhaul of agriculture. They wanted to create a "healthy, happy and sustainable" nation, while reversing the decline of the sector, which contributes just 0.5% to the economy, while creating 35% of greenhouse gas emissions. ❓ So how do you tackle climate change and ensure food security at the same time?    🌱 Regenerative agriculture 🌱 Innovative practices like no-till farming, cover cropping, and rotational grazing enhance soil health, boost biodiversity, and help capture carbon.  - Better soil health brings higher yields and improved crop quality with fewer chemicals.  - Biodiversity is essential for restoring ecosystems, with current biodiversity at just 30% of 1970’s levels.     🏙 Urban farming 🏙 Cities are embracing urban farming, bringing fresh produce closer to home.  - Vertical farming saves up to 95% of water and cuts transportation emissions.  - Community gardens turning vacant lots into green spaces, fostering community engagement and access to fresh food.     💧 Aquaponics 💧 Aquaponics combines fish farming with plant cultivation, using up to 90% less water than traditional farming.    🤝 Policy and community support 🤝 Government initiatives like the Environmental Land Management Scheme and Urban Agriculture Grants are backing sustainable practices and creating green jobs in these new industries.    Get the full story at “Spotlight on Nature Based Solutions: Food Systems”, only at The Green Jobs Revolution at The Conduit, 19 September.    Join the Movement: https://lnkd.in/e5mC2ZYM #TheConduitLondon #ConduitLive #GreenJobsRevolution

⚖ Democracy and the race for green jobs ⚖   PwC estimates that for every green job created, an extra 1.4 are generated elsewhere in the economy.    But these jobs also bring upheaval and can strip away from traditional industries. As we stand on the brink of the #greenjobsrevolution, how can we build consensus in host communities?   New forms of democracy may hold the answer:   1. Citizen Assemblies: randomly selected citizens who deliberate on important issues. This kind of inclusive decision-making ensures people’s voices are heard.   2. Participatory Budgeting: this process allows citizens to directly decide how to allocate part of a public budget. This creates transparency and accountability, ensuring that investments in green jobs align with public priorities.    3.
