Last week, we hosted Dean Carlisle, founder of Lessons in Conservation, in our town hall series: Thinking the Third Way 🌍 Dean’s passion for conservation is truly inspiring. He shared his journey growing up at Phinda Private Game Reserve, where his early experiences with wildlife ignited a lifelong dedication to conservation. Dean’s commitment to making a difference shines through his work with Lessons in Conservation, which focuses on educating and inspiring children, particularly from underprivileged communities, to protect and cherish the natural world. One of the many highlights of Dean's talk was his powerful story of Philemon, a blind student in Zimbabwe, who delivered a heartfelt speech about his love for conservation, entirely memorised. Dean emphasised the importance of creating positive, hands-on experiences for young people, because "people will only fall in love with something if they’re exposed to it." Philemon's determination to learn and express his passion for wildlife, despite his blindness, underscored Dean’s point that making a difference doesn’t require fitting in—it requires commitment, energy, and heart. This story truly resonated with our team and was a highlight of an inspiring session. Our team left the session inspired by Dean’s reminder that while we can either "fit in or change the world, we can’t do both." We’re grateful to Dean and Lessons in Conservation for joining us and opening our series with such an impactful conversation. We look forward to continuing this journey of learning from brilliant minds who push boundaries and inspire change. #ThinkingTheThirdWay #ThirdWayPartners #Conservation #Leadership #Inspiration #LessonsInConservation #Sustainability #Wildlife #YouthEmpowerment

Last week our colleague Maarten Weehuizen presented at an intimate event hosted by ASN Impact Investors for representatives of some of the leading Dutch pension funds, focussed on investing in biodiversity. Together with San Lie we spoke about how the Africa Conservation & Community Tourism Fund aims to, directly and indirectly, safeguard and ultimately grow biodiversity in key natural landscapes in sub-Saharan Africa. The key takeaway? “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good!”. Biodiversity investing is at a very early stage, and we don’t have all the answers yet, but the downside of inaction can often be much greater… #biodiversity #impactinvesting #ASNimpactinvestors #ThirdWay #TWP

Yesterday, our CEO Gonçalo Neves-Correia spoke at the event “Africa: Tierra de Oportunidades” (translated into “Africa, Land of Opportunities”) hosted by Afi in Madrid together with María Ángeles León López from Global Social Impact Investments and Jose Villena from COFIDES. During the session, Gonçalo shared insights he has gained while navigating the investment landscape across Africa. He noted, “We have a positive view of the different investment theses available on the continent, driven by demand or natural resources. The key is to build a structure that has realistic, context-specific expectations on both the time horizons and the capital required.” He shared that, “While there is an exaggerated risk perception from international investors when it comes to investing in African countries, risk mitigation remains very important. I encourage those in this space to spend time speaking to stakeholders to understand the ecosystem and solutions.” Thank you to the organisers and to all who attended. We truly enjoyed the conversation and look forward to continuing our engagement on this fascinating topic.
