The answer to this issue is staring retailers in the face. Private criminal prosecutions would solve this problem, whilst allowing police to focus their resources on other priorities. Sadly retailers are deliberately ignoring the option and refuse to supply CCTV or evidence. Many also refuse to support police / CPS prosecutions because of the potential costs of staff attending court. The problem could be resolved very quickly if retailers changed their approach and internal policies. https://lnkd.in/ejX-WHU8

Following a five week trial at Birmingham Crown Court three men have been convicted by TM Eye in a private criminal prosecution, for manufacturing and supplying vast amounts of dangerous fake tobacco products over a significant period. The value of goods recovered from a series of raids amounted to over £12 million in lost tax revenue. The actual loss is likely to be in the hundreds of millions. The trial Judge highly commended the TM Eye team stating; “This case involved an extensive investigation involving an immense number of hours worked by TM Eye Ltd. I highly commend TM Eye Ltd for the work undertaken. The surveillance was fast moving, from address to address, garage to garage, on foot, in cars and stand alone observations, without which the evidence would not have been gathered leading to these convictions. It is right for me to highly commend TM Eye Ltd.” Further details of the case will follow. #tmeye #catchandconvict #counterfeittobacco #highlycommended
