  • Exciting news from a team including our Professorial Fellow Chris Butler and Postdoctoral Associate Member Phil Turner: their study protocol suggests a new approach to evaluating rapid UTI diagnostics in primary care. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYUFa9ke

🔬 Exciting milestone: We've just published our innovative TOUCAN study protocol in BMJ Open, outlining a new approach to evaluating rapid UTI diagnostics in primary care. This platform study allows multiple promising diagnostic technologies to be assessed simultaneously in real clinical settings – potentially accelerating their journey to routine use. With UTIs affecting 50% of women and rising antibiotic resistance, the need for better diagnostic tools is clear. Our approach evaluates not just test accuracy, but also practical usability and implementation requirements – crucial information for clinicians and commissioners. We're already seeing strong recruitment across primary care sites, including evaluation of the Longitude Prize-winning Sysmex Corporation PA-100 AST System. Read more about how we're reimagining diagnostic evaluation to better serve primary care needs: https://lnkd.in/d_W44dj8 Interested in rapid UTI diagnostics? We continue to welcome discussions with diagnostic companies developing new technologies. #PrimaryCare #Diagnostics #UTI #AntimicrobialResistance #MedicalResearch #NHS

  • Congratulations to our MCR member and DPhil student Jo Helme, who thanks to her legal research is involved in helping to draft new legislation affecting millions of young people in the EU who will take up an internship! Jo was invited to present her research on the legal regulation of internships before the European Parliament as expert speaker. The EU is currently drafting new laws on internships, which will potentially affect 80% of young people in Europe (since 4 out of 5 young people complete an internship). Her speech outlined some of the underlying legal issues with the new proposals, and how better models could address these. Jo will be going to Brussels regularly this term to help with the legal drafting. https://lnkd.in/eZTKP2Ke

🇪🇺Yesterday, I delivered a speech to the European Parliament on the proposed internship/traineeship legislation (at an early 3 am, from Australia!) 🇪🇺 With 4 out of 5 young people in the EU completing a traineeship, it's a major topic of debate. Millions of young people will be affected by these new laws. My speech argued that the current proposals do not solve some of the underlying legal issues (such as the lack of clarity over what a 'trainee' is, even though the Court of Justice consistently classifies trainees as workers). Moving forward, I suggested that a 'worker plus additional rights' (proposed by the European Parliament previously) or apprenticeship model are preferable. It was a great opportunity to share my research with decision-makers as the expert speaker (albeit with lots of Aussie coffee). Watch here 📺👀: https://lnkd.in/e8Pc6WuU
