Week 23 of the #OxfordMBA: What does it truly mean to be an LGBTQ+ #ally?
This was one of the most rewarding weeks of my MBA. A few months ago, us #Pride Club co-chairs asked our classmates what they wanted from us, and the answer was resoundingly clear: Guidance on being an ally to the #LGBTQ+ community – a mission that is increasingly urgent in the workplace and beyond. 🌈
So on 25 February, we held the Rainbow Bash. This event drew 150 participants on a Tuesday evening to learn about effective workplace allyship and the process of coming out, and also to laugh with a drag show, a comedy skit, a dance lesson, and a packed party at Worcester College, Oxford. 💃🕺🪩
I must specially thank Neil Griffiths, who I first met at EUROUT – Europe’s leading LGBTQ+ business conference. Neil kindly agreed to deliver our opening keynote here at the University of Oxford, where he talked about the fundamentals of #allyship, and suggested practical actions: (1) Being hyper aware of biases and knowing how to interrupt them; (2) Leading #inclusive work practices and cultures; and (3) Actively seeking chances to use our #privilege to level the playing field – however we can, wherever we can, whenever we can. ⭐
I'm also deeply grateful to our MBA classmates from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford who agreed to be panellists, openly sharing their experiences on allyship, and in the case of the coming out panel – trusting me to moderate the emotional and moving discussion. The sessions clearly showed that while our diverse backgrounds from #Africa, #Asia, the #Americas, and #Europe necessitated unique ways of engaging with LGBTQ+ issues, we also share many common values and experiences which tie us together. 💪
To our classmates who helped with logistics, music, dancing, photography, and other tasks that popped up, you know who you are – I appreciate you so much. Lastly, let me thank my fellow Pride Club co-chairs. Margarita Quijano, Gautam Gambhir, Carlos Torres White, and Deepshikha Singh, through teamwork, the Rainbow Bash succeeded beyond our expectations. ❤️
This event was a fitting close to LGBTQ+ History Month. As I said in my moderating session, the fact that we’re celebrating this month tells us of the great progress we have made. So let us keep the momentum going on the journey to equality. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
