On October 31st a super-large 16.64m diameter shield machine rolled off the production line in Changsha, Hunan, for use in the construction of the world’s longest underwater shield machine driven highway tunnel – the Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel. The CRCHI shield machine, named Jianghai is 145m long and weighs approximately 5,000 tons. Renewable energy company Drax has appointed COWI and PINI in a new joint venture to optimise its plans to build the UK’s first new pumped storage hydro plant in almost 40 years. Drax is progressing an option to expand its existing Cruachan pumped storage facility in Scotland through the construction of a new 600 MW power station. Early October saw a Terratec 4.8m diameter EPBM lowered into place for the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority’s Ninth Bangkok Water Supply Improvement project. COWI has been awarded a contract for the Hudson River Ground Stabilization Project (HRGS) in New York. COWI will serve as the engineer of record for the project led by marine construction and dredging company, Weeks Marine. The HRGS project marks the first heavy construction contract awarded by the Gateway Development Commission (GDC) on the Hudson Tunnel Project.
