The city of Jeddah continues expanding its main sewer line in 2024. Herrenknecht is involved with two machines. A 14-kilometer link for East Jeddah is being currently built between East Haramain Road in the south and the outlying airport pumping station 2. From an intermediate shaft, two EPB machines, 4,12 m in diameter, will each drive approximately 7 kilometers of tunnel, one to the north and one to the south. The geology is complex (well-graded sand with minor silt and gravel, diorite, granodiorite, gneiss, coral limestone) and tunnel sections will be lined with segments. Herrenknecht Service has also been involved in the project from its outset, from assembly on the jobsite to commissioning and support with the start of tunnelling. A spare parts package has also been delivered. We've been involved for more than 20 years in the Middle East region and delivered more than 300 tunnelling machines for utility related projects. We wish the crews every success in their mission! ⚒️pioneeringundergroundtogether👷

Did you see one of the big three collis on its journey from Schwanau to Vienna? A Herrenknecht EPB machine is on its way for the WSKE project (Wientalsammelkanal-Entlaster)! This 3.8m-diameter TBM will help extend the Wiental canal by 9 kilometers. A major step for Vienna’s infrastructure. Looking forward to its arrival in Vienna with our customer ARGE WSKE (BEMO Tunnelling ÖSTU-STETTIN Hoch- und Tiefbau GmbH) and client City of Vienna. ⚒️pioneeringundergroundtogether👷♂️

Did you know that any TBM whatever its size can be adapted for a next challenge? At Herrenknecht, we call it rebuilding. Rebuild Services are about refurbishing and remanufacturing TBMs to make them fit by repairing and modifying their features to fit the next jobsite and geology. When a machine is sold, we agree on the option with the customer that it will be bought back by Herrenknecht at the end of the project. We can then store individual components able to be remanufactured directly on our premises. The aim is to keep using products and materials and thus maintain their value over several life cycles - the path to a functioning circular economy: “That remanufacturing is increasingly becoming a matter of course for customers too is demonstrated by the fact that they are now specifically asking for rebuilt machines", Olaf Kortz, Head of the Herrenknecht remanufacturing plant in Kehl, Germany. While renewable energy and battery storage often dominate the conversation, hydrogen is emerging as a powerful, emission-free alternative. Its potential to decarbonize challenging sectors like heavy transport, shipping, and aviation could make it a key player in achieving global climate goals. By 2050, the hydrogen market is expected to grow significantly, sparking international cooperation and innovation. Europe is already gearing up with major pipeline projects and gas network conversions to unlock its potential. Want to dive deeper into hydrogen’s role in the energy transition? A new railway line is being built in the heart of the majestic Himalayan mountains in India. The centerpiece: a 10.5 kilometer long twin-tube tunnel, which was awarded to contractor Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T). Only a few projects in this complex geology have been crowned with success to date. This now set to change. An ambitious team of experts and two custom-made Herrenknecht Single Shield TBMs with a diameter of 9,050 mm are overcoming numerous challenges. One of the key innovations is the torque box cylinder system, which allows the drive to be moved continuously horizontally and vertically, extending the drilling diameter by up to 100 mm. This helps to protect the machine from jamming in the pressing rock. The TBM is also equipped with the Herrenknecht ISP system, which transmits surface waves along the tunnel wall to detect potential geological faults at an early stage. Want to learn more about the innovative technologies and the national importance of the project? As part of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) lunchtime lecture series on Tuesday 11th March at 13:00 CET, our expert Volker Breuning will present the Tunnel Enlargement System (TES) – an innovative solution for tunnel renewal. Developed by Herrenknecht AG and PORR, TES is a bauma Innovation Award finalist in the Machine Technology category. For the first time, this system enables tunnel lining renewal without interrupting rail operations, bringing tunnels up to modern standards or even increasing their diameter.
