About us
We are UK Coaching. Through our commitment to people, passion and progress, we’re taking the lead in coaching excellence. Our mission is to put coaching at the heart of physical activity and sport. Coaching is in our DNA. For more than 30 years, alongside our partners, we have provided the coaching workforce with the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive difference. We’ve also supported our partners to do the same. We’re now widening our scope to do this on a broader scale. How? By adopting a wider definition of coaching and extending our reach into new markets where great coaching makes a difference every day. We’re here to: * Raise the profile of coaching so that it is recognised for the wider benefits it brings to society and individuals. * Help our partners create coaching systems to deliver a fit for purpose workforce that better reflects society. * Make coaching easier to get into and stay involved in. * Supply the coaching workforce with the information they need to be participant focused. * Be a hub of research excellence for coaching * Help coaches feel better connected, more knowledgeable and confident. * Be central to the sport and physical activity landscape. We’ll run an effective and efficient organisation. * Encourage technology to enable coaches and coaching. In England, we support National Governing Bodies of Sport and County Sports Partnerships as well as many other organisations across the sport and physical activity landscape. In Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, we work with the three Home Country Sports Councils.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin Bowring, a cherished member of our coaching community, whose connection with UK Coaching goes back many years. UK Coaching CEO Mark Gannon paid tribute to Kevin – who has died at the age of 70: “He has been a true friend to the organisation and many colleagues for many years and was an innovator and advocate for coaching people first and foremost.” Wales rugby head coach between 1995 and 1998, Kevin was one of the most respected figures in the game, who continued to mentor a great many young coaches as a coach development consultant. UK Coaching Learning Experience Manager Chris Chapman said Kevin was an inspiration and support to countless people within the coaching sector. “I have met him numerous times and worked with him before my time at UK Coaching and a little when I first joined. He was a massive advocate for coaching and us as an organisation.” Kevin was a former UK Coaching Board member and a dedicated volunteer on our Coaching Advisory Panel. His invaluable contributions have helped shape our commitment to supporting coaches and advancing the field of coaching. He was a non-executive director of UK Coaching from 2011-2017 and before that was on the National Coaching Foundation / sportscoachUK Coaching Committee. He has worked with lots of members of our team, including mentoring our very own Dave Reed (UK Coaching Partnership Development Manager) and Chris Porter (UK Coaching Coach Programme and Pathway Manager) and coached at all levels, across the globe. Chris worked with Kevin in the coach development space. He said: "Kevin was a real deal caring lifer of coaching and of coaches. As a coach developer he was a critical thinking partner to so many coaches. He believed in the importance of care, support and understanding when working with coaches." With over 40 years’ experience as a teacher, coach, and coach developer, Kevin’s impact on the coaching community is immeasurable. Kevin’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

The theme of this year’s #WorldMentalHealthDay is ‘workplace mental health,’ which recognises the importance and powerful influence of talking openly about mental health and well-being with people at work. At UK Coaching, we have various policies in place to support staff well-being and strive to make our workplace a place where those all-important conversations happen. We’d love to hear your experiences of this!
