State of the UK Metals Industry Report published at UK Metals Expo - The Leading Event for the Entire Metals Supply Chain. “The message is clear from the companies we represent…they want real political power in the corridors of Whitehall that understand our sector and will fight for it. This is stark message yet also a clear opportunity for Labour,” explained Rachel Eade, Chair of the UK Metals Council. “There have been some hints that things are changing in government, and they are prepared to listen, with the prospect of an Industrial Strategy – something that pretty much everyone in manufacturing wants – closer than it has been for a while.” The UK #metals sector can deliver well paid jobs in all parts of the UK, whilst also providing sovereign security for critical supply chains and infrastructure projects - part of the solution for economic growth. #steel #castiron #copper #aluminium #zinc #tin #cobalt #ukmanufacturing

EBRD and EU launch joint equity investment facility for critical raw materials: “💶Facility worth €50 million expected to mobilise another €50 million, Investments to support digitalisation and the green transition ♻️ The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) have launched a joint facility to provide equity investments for the exploration of critical and strategic raw materials, aiming to mobilise up to €100 million in investments. These raw materials are essential to the EU’s digital and green transition. The EU is developing sustainable projects for critical raw materials to reduce the risk of potential supply-chain disruptions. This will ensure that industrial sectors have the necessary resources while maintaining EU environmental and social standards. The new joint facility will support the objectives of the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act and the REPowerEU Plan.”

The World Trade Organisation has called for more transparency in China’s industrial subsidy programme, particularly with respect to #steel, semiconductors and electric vehicles in its latest WTO review. These export industries in China have been able ‘to benefit from a range of competitive advantages, from low energy prices to cheap loans and land’ reports The Times, (see article in Friday July 19th edition, by Richard Spencer, pg 35). The UK Government could help #ukmanufacturing, and economic growth, by ensuring greater parity in energy pricing to support #competitveness, given that industry in the UK has already supported investment in renewable and more sustainable energy generation through contracts for difference. #metals #steel #copper #zinc #aluminium #castiron.

It was great to hear the maiden speech from former UK Metals Council Chair, and now Member of Parliament, Chris McDonald MP in parliament yesterday, as part of the debate on the King's Speech. Focussing on the new way of governing, with service, change and action foremost, and with his background in the #metals and chemicals industries, Chris was able to give a nod towards the industrial heritage of his region (the North East of England) whilst also speaking about the future opportunities in new areas such as aviation fuels, SMRs and sustainable energy as part of a wider #industrialstrategy for the UK. As the first (probably) Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering to be an MP, he was able to reflect on the positive role of #ukmanufacturing and #ukengineering in making the UK safe, whilst providing opportunities for young people and fairer economic growth, saying "Britain is great at Industry".
