The STAA calls for a national tourism registration scheme. For over seven years, the STAA has called for a national registration scheme. The new government has the opportunity to create one. Our CEO Andrew Fenner commented in todays The Telegraph saying that a national scheme is the way to create a level the playing field across England. “Expanding this scheme to cover all of tourism is essential to fully understand the immense benefits our industry brings to the UK economy and the jobs we create," says Andy. Andy goes on to say that “..whilst this article and the approach from government, is about Landlords it’s important to remember that our industry is not landlords. We are tourism industry professionals. The government must approach this regulation from a tourism industry angle, not housing supply, if it is to fully understand the issues and get it right. “ We've seen the impact of local schemes in Scotland and the damage that getting it wrong does to tourism and the thousands of people who work in our industry. The STAA is actively working with partners at the Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers to help the Scottish government address the current challenges and sort out the mess. The government in England has the opportunity to avoid that mess, get it right first time and make the scheme the positive benefit it could be for the whole industry. A national approach is not just about regulation—it's about creating a sustainable future for the tourism industry and ensuring fairness for everyone involved. #Tourism #Policy #STAA #FairPlay #Regulation #Scotland #UKTourism #England VisitEngland Department for Culture, Media and Sport Chris Bryant , Fiona Campbell , Fiona MacConnacher Ben Edgar-Spier Carl Thomson Charlie Reith Neil Millard Merilee Karr Janet Uttley VisitBritain VisitScotland Tourism Alliance Richard Toomer https://lnkd.in/eHAYwJ3H

The UK government has published draft legislation to abolish the Furnished Holiday Let tax regime. HM Treasury has asked to meet with STAA CEO Andrew Fenner to discuss the impacts on the STR tourism industry. The STAA will be fighting for our industry and pushing the government to support tourism and the thousands of small businesses across our sector. STR tourism needs support, not yet more legislation. We encourage STAA members to send in their thoughts and inputs on the issue. Andy will feedback this back to the Treasury. The STAA hits back at Barcelona’s attack on STR tourism. STAA Chief Executive Andrew Fenner commented in Hotel Analyst that, “We understand and appreciate that Barcelona is looking at a shortage of homes, we all need places to live in. However, the answer to the housing crisis is to build more homes, not to target tourists." STR tourism thrives because that is what tourists and homeowners want. Indeed, many people can only afford to own and rent by sharing their homes. People in cities need jobs that reflect the way we live and work. That means jobs which are spread across the city, not just in one area forcing workers to flood centres in rush hour and leave them empty at weekends. STR tourism is exactly the kind of sustainable, small-scale, locally-centred tourism cities should be harnessing for low-carbon growth. He said “Short-term rental properties are a great way of dispersing tourist spending around a city, often benefiting local independent shops, cafes and restaurants. By contrast, Andy noted a hotel concentrates tourist spending and often f&b spending at a hotel benefits the local business less.“ The STAA knows the value STR tourism brings to communities. We will keep working with governments and stakeholders to ensure the sustainable, responsible future of the STR tourism industry and to secure the thousands of jobs that rely on us. #Sustainable #Responsible #STR #Tourism European Holiday Home Association (EHHA) Department for Culture, Media and Sport , Tourism Alliance , The Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA) https://lnkd.in/eYNmD25W

[NEWS] Following the results of last week’s UK General Election, new Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ announcement of new measures to accelerate housebuilding in the UK has been welcomed by the holiday let sector, which has been calling for some time for governments to tackle the real factors affecting the housing market. Andrew Fenner, CEO of the UK Short Term Accommodation Association (STAA), said: “It’s reassuring that Labour recognises the only way out of the housing crisis is to accelerate housebuilding, not lay the blame at the door of the holiday let sector. Holiday lets represent a small proportion of total housing and are even outnumbered by long-term vacant homes in more than half of the UK’s local authorities. Will the scape goating of tourism end under Labour? With Chancellor Rachel Reeves announcement of new measures to accelerate housebuilding our CEO Andrew Fenner is hopeful. Andy says in LANDLORD TODAY: “It’s reassuring that Labour recognises the only way out of the housing crisis is to accelerate housebuilding, not lay the blame at the door of the holiday let sector. Holiday lets represent a small proportion of total housing and are even outnumbered by long-term vacant homes in more than half of the UK’s local authorities. The STAA is looking forward to working with the new government to find the balance that works for business and the communes they are in and build the sustainable, responsible future for short term let tourism.
