The UKESF encourages young people to study Electronics and supports students to pursue careers in the sector.
About us
The UKESF’s mission is to encourage more young people to study Electronics and to pursue careers in the sector. In the UK, the Electronics sector is big, valuable and growing; however, the demand for capable, employable graduates is currently outstripping supply. We are an educational charity, launched in 2010, with both public and private seed-corn funding. We operate collaboratively with major companies, leading universities and other organisations to tackle the skills shortage in the Electronics sector. The UKESF ensures that more schoolchildren are aware of Electronics and the opportunities available, helping them to develop their interest through to university study. At university, we support undergraduates and prepare them for the workplace. We’re pleased to share details of a new free online course, Foundations of Radio Frequency Engineering, which has been produced by Dr Francesco Fornetti at the University of Bristol. This training course covers the fundamentals of RF Engineering - an area of understanding that we know is valued by industry. If you're a current or former Scholar, we encourage you to take a look!
At the University of Bristol, we’re excited to announce the launch of our new Free Online Course on the Foundations of Radio Frequency Engineering (https://lnkd.in/eKMJA_ZN). Designed for hands-on, practical learning, the course integrates Cadence AWR Design Environment as a virtual lab, allowing students to design and test RF circuits in a simulated environment. The course is entirely self-paced and designed for independent study, as shown in this brief video overview https://lnkd.in/eBbjjYk7. Upon completing this free course, you'll have the option to take an online assessment. If you pass, you can choose to join us for a practical, on-campus workshop at the University of Bristol (for a small fee), developed with Rohde & Schwarz, which is both instructive and fun as you can see from this short clip https://lnkd.in/edw_k33H. To make the most out of the course, you will need access to the Cadence AWR software. If you are affiliated with an academic institution, you can easily do this through the Cadence University Program. If not, Cadence Design Systems will provide you with a free temporary licence but you must request it by 𝟭 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. Don't miss out! Join our course today!

Innovate UK has invested in a cutting-edge project 'UK-GRAFT: The UK graphene research and fabrication technology foundry'. Paragraf® will use the investment to establish the world's first 2D materials device foundry, initially focusing on graphene. We're excited to announce UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) will be a key partner on this project. There is an acknowledged skills gap for technicians to support the scale-up of electronics manufacturing. We'll perform a feasibility study to identify future skills needs and deliver a ‘proof-of-concept’ training course, to provide a solution to the skills gap in this new UK industry. The University of Glasgow and University of Birmingham will also partner on the project to help Paragraf® achieve their vision. On Monday our CEO Stew Edmondson attended a Labour Party Conference Fringe Event with Chi Onwurah and Samantha Niblett MP, hosted by TechWorks and Palace Yard, which focused on how we can secure the UK Semiconductor Industry. A key message from all of the industry participants was about the vital importance of access to talent to support their growth plans. We advocate that the only sustainable solution to the overall skills shortage is to invest in the skills pipeline right from primary school. Tackling the shortage means a national-level, long-term programme to incentivise more young people to pursue the study of Electronics and semiconductors. Another point made in the discussion was about gender imbalance in our sector. Through our successful “Girls into Electronics” programme, we are starting to see increased interest and engagement. Overall, through our programmes, more than 100 employers are demonstrating their commitment to supporting young people to develop the skills that the industry needs. With continued support from industry and government leadership, we can work together to tackle the skills challenge.
Thank you to Charles Sturman and TechWorks for bringing together a wonderful roundtable lunch at Labour Party conference on Securing the UK Semiconductor Industry - and a special thanks to Chi Onwurah MP, the newly-elected chair of the influential Science, Innovation and Technology select committee and Samantha Niblett MP, newly-elected Member of Parliament for South Derbyshire for your time and engagement. We were also lucky to be joined by some of the leading players in the UK semiconductor world bringing their perspectives and challenges - but most of all, explaining why semiconductors are so vital not just in achieving net zero, the space race and, frankly, all technological progress from smart phones, to quantum and AI. Semiconductors make everything happen. Thank you all those for coming and sorry for those of you stuck on flooded motorways and trains. We'll follow up with something in London! Peter Stephens, Richard Price, Stan Boland, Frazer Anderson, Eamon O'Gorman, Sheron Shamuilia, UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) Stewart Edmondson, Arwel Evans, Mark Tippett, Simon Thomas FREng, Stuart Tooley, Leonie White, Jack Cryer, Jonathan Collins Thank you to the amazing team at the The Racquet Club Hotel & Venue for whom nothing was too much trouble! Thank you also to David J Colbran. Wonderful photographs!
