If we are serious about tackling our common challenges in reaching net zero, it is critical that we gather experts from different fields with distinct perspectives. Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action (BISCA) is an interdisciplinary Institute for sustainability and climate action, based at the University of Birmingham. BISCA join the dots between academics conducting cutting-edge research in vastly different disciplines who are focused on sustainability and climate action. Uniting experts from traditionally separate fields allows more dynamic and holistic approaches to working to solve the issues we face as a planet. On the Tuesday 12 November, BISCA are holding a business engagement event, on looking towards a new era of sustainable finance. During the event, you will: 🌟 Navigate the main barriers and opportunities in the UK’s journey to meet net zero targets, with a particular focus on financial innovation, ESG disclosure, and climate finance. 🌟 Take part in insightful discussions between key academic and industry experts in the field, to create meaningful conversations, spark ideas and seek shared opportunities for positive actions. 🌟 Have opportunities for Q&A and networking with experts, making this a valuable chance to connect with professionals who are committed to driving sustainability in finance. 🌟 Hear from leading voices in the field with speakers including: David Willock (Lloyds Bank), Emma Milner (PwC), Hisham Farag (University of Birmingham), Liza Jabbour (BISCA), Alasdair Maclachlan (University of Birmingham) and David M. Hannah (BISCA). Fostering future digital talent and entrepreneurs is a vital part of creating a sustainable tech ecosystem. Two student entrepreneurs at the University of Birmingham have developed StudyStash, an innovative learning platform that combines AI and cutting-edge neuroscience to personalise study content and adapt the learning process to each individual's unique needs. Founders Ben Ward and Jonathan Graham created StudyStash while revising for their second-year Computer Science exams, based on their own study experiences. They designed the platform to reduce exam stress, boost confidence and improve overall academic performance. Supported by the University’s B Enterprising student start-up programme, UoB Elevate, the pair have now moved the fledgling business to the next level. University of Birmingham education experts have worked with Ben and Jonathan to design and roll out a year-long, University-wide pilot of the platform, as part of a next stage of the start-up programme UoB Elevate PLUS. There is a massive opportunity for the West Midlands when it comes to digital and technology. Effective collaboration across the region is vital to closing the digital skills gap and unlocking the growth potential of the region’s digital economy. TechWM and University of Birmingham, via Birmingham Digital Futures (BDF), are collectively working to improve outcomes in the region - from supporting children and young people to develop the skills to pursue digital and tech careers to upskilling and reskilling the existing workforce in this critical area. We recognise within BDF that the only way we can make a long-lasting impact is through catalysing collaboration and that’s why connecting with our delivery partners has enabled us to make such an impact across the region. Over the last 12 months, BDF has supported over 30,000 young people in developing vital digital skillsets to inspire them into careers in the tech sector. Through our delivery partners we have been able to support in providing 1.5m hours of engagement in primary, secondary and further education environments. 💡 Exciting insights from the #BTW24 Cyberverse Panel Event 💡 As part of #BirminghamTechWeek's Women in Tech day, Ruby Jones attended the Cyberverse panel discussion. This event was packed with thought-provoking discussions around the future of networking, inclusivity in tech, and the critical role security plays in shaping the digital landscape. Here are some of Ruby’s key takeaways: 🌟 Creating an Inclusive Environment It’s essential to foster a tech space that promotes diversity and inclusion. We had discussions on women’s health, the importance of International Women’s Day (IWD), and the role of Women in Tech forums. It's clear that giving back and creating opportunities for future generations is key to driving long-term change in the industry. 🌟 Secure and Reliable Networks: A major focus of the event was the critical need for secure and reliable networks, not only to ensure safety but also to drive significant economic growth. The UK is at the forefront, with advanced security legislation that provides a strong foundation for building trusted networks. However, there remains substantial room for innovation and further development to meet evolving challenges and opportunities in the tech landscape. 🌟 Network of the Future: What do we want the next generation to achieve? The discussion focused on the network of the future and the security measures that need to be embedded into its design. Balancing risk and security is crucial to ensuring networks are both safe and scalable. 🌟 Breaking Down Barriers: A key theme was the need for a community forum to openly discuss and address the barriers to innovation. By encouraging dialogue, we can collaborate to overcome these challenges and drive the industry forward. 🌟 Acting now: We need to act now. The cost of inaction when it comes to faster, more efficient networks is significant. As technology evolves, staying ahead is critical to avoiding falling behind and missing out on opportunities. This event was a reminder of how much progress we can achieve when we come together to tackle the complex challenges facing the tech industry. I am looking forward to continuing these conversations and working on creating the networks of the future throughout the rest of the week!
