Industry projects are a vital component of our engineering undergraduate degrees, offering students exposure to real-world engineering design briefs before they leave university. We’re delighted to share our latest blog featuring recent graduate Ethan Owi, who, in the final year of his MEng Civil Engineering degree, worked with his project group to design a new train-care facility in Holyhead on behalf of Arcadis and Transport for Wales. Faced with challenges such as difficult ground conditions and space limitations, Ethan and his team applied their civil engineering expertise to develop practical solutions for the new maintenance depot - and the CAD illustrations really speak for themselves. We’re immensely proud to have reached the shortlist for this year’s Royal Academy of Engineering Bhattacharyya Award, recognising our longstanding partnership with EDF (UK) to ensure safe, clean, and affordable energy for the UK. Professor Thomas Scott, from the University of Bristol’s Interface Analysis Centre shared this tribute: “In being shortlisted for this award we celebrate the legacies of Professor David Smith and Professor Peter Flewitt, who both made significant contributions to the EDF partnership over many years. Sadly David died in 2015 and Peter passed away suddenly last weekend and we regret that they were not able to share and celebrate in this culmination of their work, but we are grateful to have known and worked with them both.“

Soaring success for BristolSEDS : Space Exploration Society 🚀 Kudos to University of Bristol's Team Blackbird for claiming the top spot at the Mach 2024 competition! Each year, university teams from across the UK gather at Machrihanish Air Base, Scotland, to put their design and build skills to the ultimate test by launching their own rockets. The Discover Space UK competition gives students an incredible opportunity to get hands-on within university facilities, putting their mechanical and electrical engineering skills to the test. The key to Team Blackbird’s success was their handmade fibreglass airframe built to minimise mass. Their 2.7m rocket, weighing 16kg, reached an astonishing 2255m, hitting speeds of 1029 km/h. Next up, HyPower Bristol are gearing up for the European rocketry challenge in October, where they’ll be competing with Bristol’s first-ever liquid-engine rocket! 🔥
