Nissan Motor Corporation recently announced the launch of affordable on-board bi-directional charging on selected electric vehicles from 2026, following a successful collaboration with the University of Nottingham. The Vehicle to Grid (V2G), or Vehicle to Everything (V2X) technology, which allows electric vehicle owners to use electricity stored in their car’s battery to power their homes, or sell it back into the grid, will launch in the UK initially followed by other markets in Europe. Following a successful year-long project at the University of Nottingham, where we hosted Nissan on campus including providing a base of operations at our Creative Energy Homes, Nissan has become the first car company to gain G99 Grid code certification with an AC-based solution, needed to supply electricity into the UK national energy supply. University of Nottingham is at the forefront of solving one of the UK's biggest road infrastructure challenges—potholes!! Dr. Nick Thom, an internationally renowned academic at the NTEC - Nottingham Transportation Engineering Centre (NTEC) is working on an innovative solution to improve road durability and prevent potholes. His team is embedding tiny capsules into road surfaces, designed to control where cracks form by targeting weaker areas. Initial tests have shown promising results, with less stone loss over two years. Trials including a long-term test on the M26 is underway. Additionally, Dr. Thom is the principal investigator in an EPSRC-funded project which aims to prevent surface damage in road design and revolutionise repair methods. This involves pinpointing root causes of damage, such as water and ice, through experimental and theoretical studies, creating a new level of understanding for pavement and highway engineering. Some examples below: - Sprint Electric, a world-leading manufacturer of drives for industrial motor control chose to establish a secondary location at the Power Electronics, Machines and Control Research Institute (PEMC) on the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus. Supported by researchers from the PEMC Group, KTP Associate Azlia Abdul Rahman created a low-voltage simulation model of an AC drive using bi-directional switching technology for AC-AC power conversion. - UoN Zero Carbon Cluster has launched two pathways within the zero-carbon transport propulsion space, electrification and hydrogen propulsion solutions, offering opportunities to connect with industries in need of commercial solutions. - University of Nottingham is at the forefront of translating research into real world applications; from tools used in clinical investigations to designing software for electric motors. Our spin-out portfolio also continues to grow, with six new ventures launched in the past year, bringing the total to 37 companies. Congratulations to Dr Mark Jabbal from Aerospace Engineering and team for the successful completion of a Spitfire cockpit simulator for "Operation Spitfire". Over 100 undergraduate students have volunteered time to work on this project over a 5 year period. The simulator is now open to the public at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent. “The aim of the simulator is when the public try it, they’ll immediately get a sense of what it’s like to be in a Spitfire aircraft, because we’ve created the cockpit, the layout, the instruments, and the feel of it to be as close to a Spitfire aircraft as possible" said Mark.
