‘If we don’t build social rented housing at scale, we will never house everyone and be a democratic society.’ These were the opening remarks from Colin Tweedy Last night at the launch of the New Homes New Ways exhibition. This exhibition highlights the scale of the housing crisis and homelessness in the UK, as well as examples of how Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) are bringing hope by delivering much needed homes. 🏡 Here are some of our favourite takeaways from the evenings speakers: 📈 Marcus Ralling from Homes England shared that he’s regularly asked how we’re going to meet the 1.5m home target set by the new government. He said that ‘we need everyone in the sector to play their part’, and that ‘innovation is critical for meeting those housing objectives, while respecting our climate goals’. 🤝 As a partner of the exhibition, Crisis’ Francesca Albanese highlighted that last year as a nation we spent over £2bn managing, and not ending homelessness, which is shameful. So we need ‘new supply but it has to be genuinely affordable. That means 90,000 social rented homes per year.’ We were also pleased to highlight our direct support of MMC solutions through Agile Homes. And Jeremy Sweetland pointed out the systemic failures in the current system, stating that ‘we need a step change, and that takes collective leadership and responsibility’ from those in the room.
