We had a fantastic time yesterday in Newcastle launching our Voice North East project in partnership with the North East Combined Authority, bringing together 100 schools all with the goal of embedding oracy. Kate Paradine, Voice 21 CEO, said in her opening address: “Our vision is that every child will have the high quality oracy education that Voice 21 Oracy Centres of Excellence offer. With the commitment & leadership we have in your schools, you can ensure that the North East is the region which shows the whole country what it looks like when oracy excellence becomes an ordinary part of every child’s education, in every school, every day. As the Oracy Commission has said - parents want this, democracy and the economy need it, teachers welcome it and most important of all: our children deserve it. At Voice 21 we look forward to working with you to make it happen.” We can’t wait to see what our schools in the North East region achieve over the coming year.

About us
Voice 21 is the national oracy education charity. We exist to empower every child to use their voice for success in school and life. We work to transform learning and life chances through talk by increasing access to a high-quality oracy education for those that need it most. Children’s spoken language skills are one of the strongest predictors of their future life chances. Yet too many disadvantaged children arrive at school with poor communication skills, already behind their more advantaged peers. Research shows that economically disadvantaged students can be as much as 19 months behind in language development by the age of five. Left unaddressed, this gap grows rather than diminishes as students move through school. Despite widespread recognition of the importance of oracy (e.g. for learning, attainment, confidence, wellbeing, employability, civic engagement) only a minority of schools have consistent, coherent or adequately resourced provision to give it the time and status it deserves. This is where Voice 21 makes a difference. Launched in 2015, we have since grown to work with over 1,200 schools and 10,000 schools across the UK. Voice 21 believes that oracy has been undervalued and overlooked within our schools for too long denying the majority of children and young people opportunities consistently afforded to an advantaged few. It is time for change.

Yesterday we were in parliament to welcome the Commission on the Future of Oracy Education in England’s We Need To Talk report. We are delighted to support the findings of this report and its central message: that oracy should be the fourth “R”, of equal status with reading, writing and arithmetic. Voice 21 CEO, Dr Kate Paradine, said “This landmark report makes a compelling case for oracy to at last take its rightful place alongside literacy and numeracy at the core of our education system. It is now incumbent on us all to ensure that the recommendations are enacted to unlock the opportunity of oracy education in every classroom. At Voice 21 we believe that schools have the power to change a child’s life and create a fairer society. That is why we look forward to working with teachers, school leaders and policy-makers to make the ambition of ‘We need to talk’ a reality for this generation of children and young people.” Top cap off an incredible day for oracy, we’re proud to have Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence Cubitt Town Primary School feature as an example of exemplary oracy provision on BBC Breakfast yesterday, full clip below.
