‘Adolescence’ and Gareth Southgate… We are creating new creative spaces at Wales Millennium Centre with young people so that they have somewhere in which they feel like they belong. They have been designing spaces (for 5 years now) where they can make real-world connections, share positive experiences together and be creative. Where they have agency, where they can express themselves and find their voice. Gareth Southgate’s lecture this week and the Netflix series ‘Adolescence’ have attracted much needed comment and debate. The attention economy is steering a generation of young people down endless tunnels which are easy to get lost in and not easy to find your way out of. We know that some of these tunnels are causing harm. To boys and girls. The philosopher Simone Weil said that, “Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.” Our attention is valuable which is why it is being fought for, for profit. But the word attention comes from the verb meaning ‘to tend to’, and ‘to stretch toward’. It is part of how we tend to each other and also where tenderness comes from. No wonder that tenderness appears to be on the decline. Part of the recipe for the antidote to this harm and theft is to give more space to young people. Where they can hang out and stretch out. On their terms. Where they can be inspired (this does not always happen in school). Where they can make deeper authentic person-to-person connections and have transformational experiences safely. Where they can think critically. Where their attention is not always online. Where they can switch off sometimes. Where there are trusted, skilled and experienced adults on hand too. These spaces have been disappearing. Hats off to Gareth Southgate and Stephen Graham for speaking out as apparently decent men showing degrees of tenderness when so many men with power and money - who have such disproportionately high control over the information we receive - are so thoroughly indecent and lack tenderness. By the way, of course, ‘Adolescence’ also shows us the power of art and great storytelling that requires attention. Something else we should be investing more in. Let’s create belonging. Spaces that foster belonging. That give young people a chance. Arts centres can offer this. Please support our work in Platfform. This is where we try to develop and do the work. https://lnkd.in/eRhGv2T9 Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru | Wales Millennium Centre

About us
We are a home for the arts in Wales, and a cauldron of creativity for the nation. We fire imaginations by curating world-class, critically-acclaimed touring productions, from musical theatre and comedy to dance, cabaret and an international festival. We kindle emerging talents with fresh, provocative and popular pieces of our own, rooted in Welsh culture. And we ignite a passion for the arts in young people with life-changing learning experiences and chances to shine in the spotlight. We are Wales Millennium Centre. Fire for the imagination. Rydyn ni’n gartref i’r celfyddydau yng Nghymru, ac yn grochan o greadigrwydd i’r genedl gyfan. Rydyn ni’n tanio’r dychymyg drwy guradu cynyrchiadau teithiol arobryn o’r radd flaenaf – o sioeau cerdd i gomedi a dawns, cabaret a gŵyl ryngwladol. Rydyn ni’n meithrin doniau newydd gyda’n gweithiau ffres, pryfoclyd a phoblogaidd, wedi eu gwreiddio’n ddwfn yn niwylliant ein gwlad. Ac rydyn ni’n ennyn angerdd pobl ifanc dros y celfyddydau, gan roi iddynt gyfleoedd dysgu sy’n newid eu bywydau ac yn rhoi cyfle iddynt ddisgleirio. Ni yw Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru. Tanwydd i’r dychymyg.

As LGBTQ+ History Month comes to a close, we're thrilled to share the mesmerising 'Big Gay Love' scene from last December's 'Nutcracker (the alternative cabaret)’. The show reimagines the classic tale through a queer lens, celebrating love and connection in all its forms. This captivating scene shows a tender moment between The Rat King (Len Blanco) and The Nutcracker (Diomede), with aerial artistry by Moth (Rotten Peach) and Ellie-Dee (Daisy Williams). Original live music from Sam Roberts and Heledd Watkins of HMS Morris and movement from Elan Isaac. Directed by Juilliette Manon. Watch the full performance: https://lnkd.in/eRAjJuRg Wrth i Fis Hanes LHDTC+ ddod i ben, rydyn ni wrth ein bodd yn rhannu golygfa hudolus ‘Big Gay Love’ o ‘Nutcracker (y cabaret amgen)’ fis Rhagfyr diwethaf. Mae'r sioe yn ail-ddychmygu'r stori glasurol trwy lens gwiar, gan ddathlu cariad a chysylltiad yn ei holl ffurfiau. Mae’r olygfa gyfareddol hon yn dangos eiliad dyner rhwng Y Rat King (Len Blanco) a’r Nutcracker (Diomede), gyda chelfyddyd awyrol gan Moth (Rotten Peach) ac Ellie-Dee (Daisy Williams). Cerddoriaeth fyw wreiddiol gan Sam Roberts a Heledd Watkins o HMS Morris a symudiad gan Elan Isaac. Cyfarwyddwyd gan Juilliette Manon. Gwyliwch y perfformiad llawn: https://lnkd.in/eRAjJuRg

So proud to be on this list! We are committed to actively reducing our emissions and prioritising resources to meet our target of being a net zero organisation by 2035. Mor falch o fod ar y rhestr hon! Rydyn ni wedi ymrwymo i leihau ein hallyriadau a blaenoriaethu adnoddau ar draws ein sefydliad, er mwyn cyrraedd ein targed o fod yn sefydliad sero net erbyn 2035.
Today we are celebrating the organisations that trialled Version 2 of Theatre Green Book last year. These organisations, along with so many others across the theatre, opera and dance sector, were vital in contributing to the Version 2 updates which were published last June. 💚 They have used the Theatre Green Book tools to chart their progress, reaching the milestone of 'Basic' level, and continue to develop and discover innovative ways to make theatre greener. 🌿 https://lnkd.in/eVNWTnnq Chichester Festival Theatre Headlong Theatre Lowry National Theatre of Scotland Royal Shakespeare Company Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru | Wales Millennium Centre National Theatre Northern Stage Newcastle English National Ballet Young Vic Royal Ballet and Opera
