£34 million Government Funding for Safety Works at 130 Coal Tip Sites across Wales Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies and Cabinet Secretary for Finance Mark Drakeford visited the Walters Dyffryn Rhondda Tip Stabilisation project in the Afan Valley yesterday(19th March 2025). They confirmed nearly £34 million of investment to deliver safety works to 130 coal tip sites across Wales, similar in scope to the work Walters have done at Dyffryn Rhondda. This funding will be part of the Welsh Government's Coal Tip Safety Grant Scheme and will now allow 10 local authorities to carry out safety works to tip sites across Wales. Walters have recently completed Phase 1 of the tip stabilisation works at the former coal tip site in the Afan Valley of Neath Port Talbot. Walters reinstated the four worst areas of the riverbank by installing block stone walls. Walters have recently mobilised on the 17/03/2025 to commence Phase 2 works, which involve protecting the remainder of the riverbank from further deterioration by installing more block stone walls and repair measures to existing gabion baskets, which encompasses the scope envisaged for the 2nd phase of this important project. #CoalTipStabilisation #NeathPortTalbot #DyffrynRhondda #WaltersWay #Engineering Images are Crown Copyright Welsh Government

How do you build a road? Episode 8 ‘The Big Bridge and a lot of soft rock’ For our next episode, I am joined again by Mark Sabbato Construction Manager for Kier Transportation on the National Highways A417 Missing Link road project. With over a million cubic metres of material moved and a BIG bridge taking shape, the site is busy. The 37m long bridge in question is the largest and most impressive structure on the project, called the Gloucestershire Way Crossing, designed for people and wildlife. Mark: “There is a huge amount of engineering involved in this part of the project, and we are just excavating the main section to reveal the continuous pilled wall. “This will show the full scale of the road, and so far, we have now excavated over a million cubic metres of material, moved by our earthworks contractor, Walters. “And it’s been a delicate operation as we reduce the road gradient from 10% to 8%. The rock is very soft and easy to overbreak, so the team is carefully stepping it down, brushing each layer as they go.” “We continue to deliver the project working to a 3D digital model. This gives us a clear vision of the final result and helps us stay on track to meet our programme.” Want to see some of our other Episodes with Mark Sabbato and Natasha James of Kier Group and Steve Foxley ChPP MAPM MCHIT of National Highways?
