With the spotlight on the new government budget, Simon Thirtle summarises what the Chancellor has already announced relating to the affordable housing sector:

All eyes will be on the new government’s budget today - but at first glance there will be significant announcements for the affordable housing sector: a £500m top up for the existing 2021-26 AHP to deliver 5,000 new homes; consultation upon a 5 year rent settlement with increases at CPI +1 (but with possibility to explore a 10 year settlement); the ability for Councils to retain 100% of their right to buy receipts for investment in the delivery of social homes; and £128m in funding for specific housing projects round up the key highlights so far. As always, the detail will be critical - but on the face of things this budget could well mark one of the most significant changes in the sector for a generation and enable the delivery of homes that is very much needed. It's widely known that as the UK's population ages, the gap between the number of people who require paid for care and the number of care givers is widening. In the second article from our Employment Law, Care Sector Update, Natalie Payne, an Associate in our Employment Team, discusses the the findings of the Skills for Care report, which suggests that that between 2023 and 2040, the number of people aged 65 and over in the population will have increased by 29%, requiring an additional 540,000 new posts in the care sector. Our Executive Partner for the Newcastle office, Nick Gholkar, attended the inaugural FB FASHION BALL/NATIONAL BUSINESS HER0 AWARDS last week, where he was recognised with the well-deserved Inspirational Male Business Leader award. The firm also took home the Team of Excellence award. Check out the comments for a couple of extra photos from this fun new addition to the business calendar in the North East.

I had a great evening at the inaugural North East FB FASHION BALL/NATIONAL BUSINESS HER0 AWARDS which included a fashion parade featuring business folk from the region. Whilst (to everyone’s relief) I didn't walk the catwalk, I was surprised and grateful to be awarded the "Inspirational Male Business Leader" award, and even more thrilled that as a firm Ward Hadaway picked up the Team of Excellence award (go team!!)   Such a fun and different addition to the business calendar in the North East, providing a great opportunity to network with local business leaders. Already looking forward to the event next May! Thanks to my dear friend Tim Aisbitt for his top class company on the evening and spell binding photography skills !

Solicitor (Health and Care Advisory) at Ward Hadaway

Last week I made use of Ward Hadaway's volunteering programme to spend the day helping out at Smart Works Newcastle's Sustainable Fashion Sale, arranged by my fab pal Kathryn Armstrong and the rest of the wonderful Smart Works team. It was a fantastic event with so many lovely supporters, both volunteers and attendees, that allowed us to raise over £4,000 for this great cause! Every penny will directly help to fund the crucial work that Smart Works do (and it also allowed me to perfect my raffle ticket sales tactics so everyone is a winner!) 🏆 Smart Works Newcastle is a charity that supports unemployed women in the North East into work through the provision of high-quality interview clothing and one-to-one coaching. 63% of women get a job after visiting SmartWorks and 97% say they feel more confident in themselves and their job search. After a successful job interview, attendees are also invited back for a second fitting and getting 5 additional items of clothing to start their new job with. If you want to show your support you can: > Donate your clothing - Smart Works accepts both good quality work and non-work items, so get clearing your wardrobe before the festive season! > Donate your money - You can donate via the SmartWorks website here: https://lnkd.in/e-wzPQJ4 > Attend an event - the next event is the Festive Fashion and Fizz on 21st November.
