Waterways Ireland has officially commenced construction of a new Craft Centre of Excellence in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. Developed by Pat Loftus Construction, the facility will replace the Tullamore Harbour depot, which has served as a regional base for over 60 years and is expected to be operational by June 2026. The centre will preserve traditional lock-gate crafting and heritage fittings production, ensuring the continued maintenance of 120 locks across 420 km of navigable waterways. It will also house mechanical teams responsible for maintaining specialist equipment and serve as a base for 70 Waterways Ireland staff across various departments. Located 1 km east of Tullamore, the project will create 20–30 jobs during construction and support the ongoing development and maintenance of Ireland’s inland waterways and associated infrastructure. The modern facility will enhance operational efficiency while safeguarding traditional skills for future generations.
