The purpose behind TRACE by isla, the definitive carbon measurement platform for events. 🗣️ Our CEO and Founder, Anna Abdelnoor, discusses how our industry has a big part to play in reducing the impact of events on the environment and why there was a real need to build something designed for the events community that could actually be used. It wasn’t just about measuring events' footprints; it was about aggregating that data and understanding the event industry's overall impact. 🎤 Hear from one of our valued TRACE community, Russ Lidstone, President, Inizio Engage XD & CMO, Inizio Engage, on why they started using TRACE and how it’s helped them achieve their sustainability goals. See TRACE in action—check out the comments below for more details. 👇 #SustainableEvents #EventProfs #EventCarbonMeasurement

By 2050, all businesses will need to meet Net Zero emission targets, laid out in legislation. To reach Net Zero, organisations must be focused on reducing their carbon emissions as much as possible. Reaching Net Zero will involve deep diving into your business operations, finding ways to measure your carbon emissions and empowering all stakeholders to take responsibility. It’s no mean feat, but there are businesses out there who are already on their journey and everyone can learn from them. Next week, Jennie Mossman who is Sustainability Lead at Amplify will be sharing their learnings around understanding Amplify’s operational footprint - with a transparent insight into some of the challenges faced. isla Members can join the session live (if you haven’t received an email, let us know!) If you’re not yet part of our community, we’ll be sharing some snippets of the session afterwards. #EventProfs #SustainableEvents #NetZero

This is what the carbon impact report of a world-first, zero waste, reusable exhibition stand made from waste carpet looks like… For context, alongside The Bulb, Informa, and The Meetings Show, we worked with Paradigm 24 Limited to create a completely new stand concept and were able to measure the carbon impact of this stand through our measurement platform, TRACE. There were a lot of positives: ✅ The stand’s innovative tiles were made from event carpet, which would have otherwise have gone to waste ✅ It’s also completely reusable, so we’re able to take the stand to other events, until it can be used no more ✅ Ocean plastic was used for part of the flooring, to prevent waste ✅ At the end of life, each component can be easily recycled in a closed loop system, as there is no nasty glue or other materials bonding the tiles together ✅ The durability of the tiles mean that the stand doesn’t need to be wrapped when transported or stored Of the 1.4 tonnes of carbon emitted, this is where it mostly came from: 🚛 Transport: The materials went on a bit of a journey to be transformed into the titles and everything was transported to Paradigm HQ 🧱 Materials: The process of turning ocean plastic into materials used for the flooring contributed production emissions ⚡ Energy: Waste carpet was made into pellets, which were then converted into the stand’s tiles The brilliant thing is that this stand will be reused over and over again, meaning that in the future, organisations who use it will not need to account for emissions generated during production! #EventProfs #SustainableEvents #CarbonMeasurement

It’s a hot one in London today! ☀ With warmer weather comes a big responsibility for event organisers to put contingency plans in place to ensure the safety of their attendees and team, whilst also limiting their environmental impact. As global temperatures rise, the number of days the UK observes 25 °C or more will increase* which means more events happening during toasty temperatures. We’ve shared a blog post featuring some of things organisers should be thinking about during the planning stages for their summer events as well as some last minute pointers if your event is just around the corner. You’ll find the link to our blog in the comments 👇 #EventProf #SummerEvents #SustainableEvents #meetingsandevents

This week our new Mastering Waste Measurement Action Group had a kickoff meeting at the Business Design Centre, led by isla’s Community Action Group Manager Megan Harris. This brilliant group of individuals have experience which stretches the breadth of the events industry and throughout the afternoon, many stories were shared about the group’s collective experience of waste measurement. It was great to hear from both our in-person attendees and those who joined virtually. Over the coming months, this group will work closely together to identify the challenges we face when measuring waste and work to build solutions that the whole events industry can benefit from, eventually identifying what power we have to effect change in policies. Watch this space! #EventProfs #SustainableEvents

🎬 The making of a world first zero waste, reusable exhibition stand. Innovation, experimentation, and creativity are crucial for the events industry, especially when it involves reducing waste, carbon, and impact on the planet. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: we’re so proud to collaborate with our partners Paradigm 24 Limited (Lee Cooper), InformaThe Bulb and The Meetings Show to showcase what is possible to drive environmental change. A big thank you to Better Stands / Informa for putting together this brilliant video that perfectly tells the story of the stand. We’re excited to share a mini impact report evaluating the stand's emissions soon, using our carbon measurement platform, TRACE. #EventProfs #SustainableEvents #SustainableEvent

Organisers of the Paris Olympics say they are setting ‘new sustainability standards for global sporting events.’* Their aim: 🌳 To reduce the environmental and climate impact of the Olympics in all aspects of delivery operations by 50%, compared to the 2010s   Their approach: 📒 Implementation of the revised ISO 20121 standard for event sustainability management 📒 A responsible procurement strategy which places environmental requirements based on commitments to circular economy, carbon emissions reduction and environmental preservation   Some things already in place... 🏗 Materials: 94% of materials used to build the Olympic Village were recovered from deconstruction and 95% of buildings and temporary structures are pre-existing ☀ Energy: All venues are powered by 100% renewable energy and are connected to the grid to limit emissions and particulate matter from gas generators. These installations will remain after the Games to allow future events to rely on a lower-carbon electricity supply. 🥘 Catering: 13 million meals will be served during the Games. To halve the carbon impact (compared to an average French meal), food options will be at least 50% vegetarian. ♻ Onward life: 90% of equipment and goods have already secured an onward life trajectory to ensure their reuse. 🚉 Transport: 100% of venues are accessible by public transport. There is already an estimated 37% reduction in the Olympic fleet compared to London 2012.   What we hope to see moving forward: 📈 An impact report comparing performance against targets, and how they have (or haven’t!) achieved these so other major sporting events can learn 👀 Insights into how this compares to previous Olympics, what progress they’ve made to increase the overall sustainability of the Games and the International Olympic Committee – IOC's future plans 📊 A comprehensive carbon and waste impact report that celebrates wins and learnings We’re loving the commitment to delivering in line with the Paris Agreement (are we seeing a theme in sustainability here?) but we know things don’t stop when the doors open!   #SustainableEvents #EventProfs #Olympics #Paris2024   *Olympics.com: ‘All you need to know about Paris 2024 sustainability’ and 'Sustainability Report Summary' (links in comments)
