In celebration of Black History Month, we recently hosted a thought-provoking walking tour exploring the rich tapestry of Black history in the area local to our new office. Our journey highlighted a range of historical figures and landmarks, including uncovering the connections between our key infrastructure and public services to the legacy of the slave trade, delving into the courageous stories of abolitionists, and recognising the vital contributions of Black professionals to our health services and the development of the NHS. The tour offered colleagues a meaningful opportunity to engage with and reflect on these important narratives, deepening our understanding of the ongoing impact of Black history in our society. We look forward to continuing these conversations and honouring these histories throughout the year! #BlackHistoryMonth #ReclaimingNarratives

📝 Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced that she will be changing the measure of debt, as part of the government's fiscal rules. The announcement will see the current rule limiting the level of public sector net debt changed to focus on limiting the level of public sector net financial liabilities (PSNFL) instead. While this change may seem technical, it will allow the government to spend up to £50bn extra on infrastructure projects 🏗 . What could this mean for upcoming budget? Here are a few possible implications for public service organisations: - The budget will likely focus on infrastructure investment, although not all of the £50bn is expected to be allocated - The change could enable funding pots to address ongoing capital challenges, such as the record high maintenance backlog (https://lnkd.in/eha8H3s5), the shortfall in capital funding identified in Lord Darzi's report (https://lnkd.in/eq2ZZhH4), and the use of RAAC concrete in public sector buildings. - The announcement could also allow the chancellor to restart paused or cancelled infrastructure projects, such as the New Hospitals Programme, HS2 or the Lower Thames Crossing This announcement opens up possibilities for increased investment in public services but it remains to be seen which government priorities will see the lion's share of the allocation.
