Wellcome supports research to transform health. We’re taking on climate change, infectious disease and mental health.

About us

Wellcome supports science to solve the urgent health challenges facing everyone. We’re a global charitable foundation. And we want everyone to benefit from science’s potential to improve health and save lives. We support discovery research into life, health and wellbeing, and we’re taking on three worldwide health challenges: mental health, climate and health and infectious diseases. Ask us questions, comment on posts and share your thoughts with us. We want to spark conversations, inspire debate and create new collaborations. • With ambitious commitments and a shared sense of urgency, the world is taking a decisive step toward cleaner air and healthier communities. "This ambitious goal underscores the power of global collaboration in safeguarding public health in a warming world. The true challenge will lie in how swiftly and effectively we can achieve this goal,” said Rachel Huxley, Wellcome’s Head of Mitigation. “Both climate change and air pollution stem from shared drivers, with fossil fuels being the primary culprit. Tackling super pollutants acts as a critical emergency brake, addressing both global warming and air pollution simultaneously. It's a clear win-win for both people and the planet.”

👏 Over 50 countries, cities and organisations agreed to reduce the health impacts of air pollution by 50% by 2040 at the World Health Organization Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health. Delivering on this vision will save tens of millions of lives by 2040, and improve the lives of billions of people living with heart disease, lung disease, cancer and mental health conditions. We also pledged $90million for climate and health efforts in the next two years. Read more: https://bit.ly/3QRg1s3 #CleanAir4Health2025 #AirPollution #AirQuality #Health

  • Exploring the social, ethical and legal contexts of genomics could make research more ethical and equitable. It also offers huge potential to spark ideas and shape new research. Transdisciplinary collaboration could be the key to unlocking this. Wellcome’s Discovery Research team recently ran a series of workshops to explore the collaborative potential of researchers in genomics, humanities and social sciences and other stakeholders. The workshops, held in London and Cape Town in 2024, brought together experts from 27 countries, spanning expertise in biodiversity, human and pathogen genomics, bioethics, law and the social sciences. Together, they uncovered the biggest barriers to collaboration and prioritised opportunities. Key recommendations: • provide funding to support early-stage brokerage, networks and collaborative research • develop a ‘critical questions’ toolkit to support dialogue throughout the research lifecycle Read more about the workshop findings and recommendations in our new report ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eTDsdfm2

  • Could we one day edit memories? And if we could, how might that help people with post-traumatic stress disorder? This is just one possible scientific breakthrough that researchers are predicting through the Science Breakthrough Radar. Supported by Wellcome, the Radar brings together researchers, scientists and people working in policy to understand and anticipate the trends in science over the next five to 25 years. This helps policymakers prepare for the implications of upcoming technologies and breakthroughs before they arrive in society. What other trends in science is the Radar already seeing? • The Atlas of Longitudinal Datasets is a transformative tool for research. It’s a free online resource to explore longitudinal datasets from all over the world. It makes finding these datasets easier than ever before. This has incredible potential for mental health research - but it doesn’t stop there. It includes datasets that focus on physical health conditions or socioeconomic factors. ”The most exciting part of the Atlas is what you can do with it,” says project lead Professor Louise Arseneault. Explore the atlas via the link in the comments.

  • Genomics could help us predict diseases. 🧬 Polygenic risk scores are one approach. They use genetic information to estimate a person’s risk of developing certain diseases. These scores incorporate many small genetic changes, each contributing to the risk of a disease. They’re developed using large-scale genomics studies. But right now, genomics studies don’t reflect the diversity of the population. This affects the accuracy of polygenic risk scores. For more accurate disease prediction, we must diversify genomic data. Learn how genomics is transforming healthcare ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/ehnVJ-Xf

  • Looking for climate and health funding? Our Climate Impacts Awards will support projects that can drive climate policy action at scale by making the impacts of climate change more visible. We are looking for proposals that: • generate context-specific evidence using community knowledge and experiences to drive policy actions • serve the needs of communities most impacted by the health impacts of climate change • advance stories and narratives that tend to be underrepresented in public discourse 💰 Level: Up to £2.5 million 💡 Duration: Up to 3 years 🗓️ Deadline: 30 April 2025 Learn more about eligibility, key dates and how to apply: https://lnkd.in/eEBeAYYq

Meet Dr Sokhna Thiam, Professor Helen King and Professor Wiebke Arlt – three women who are advancing research on women’s health. Their work is focused on improving understanding and awareness of health issues affecting women. This includes the impacts of heat on pregnancy, the history of women’s bodies, and polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition affecting women’s ovaries. We believe diversity of people and expertise leads to richer understanding and more impactful discoveries. That’s why we’re proud to support these women, and many others, in their vital work to improve women’s health. #WomensHistoryMonth #WomensHistoryMonth2025

  • Climate change is damaging our health. So what action can we take? 🌏 From clean energy to sustainable farming practices, there are already credible and deliverable solutions. We're partnering with the Natural History Museum on their new gallery – Fixing Our Broken Planet. The gallery will combine science and storytelling to share solutions that show a future is possible where we can all thrive. The free gallery opens on 3 April 2025 in London. "This new partnership and gallery comes at a critical time when we need to put health at the heart of climate action,” Alan Dangour, Director of Climate and Health at Wellcome.
