"What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." An important quote to remember 💙 #InternationalDayOfHappiness
WAY Widowed and Young
Non-profit Organizations
We are a national UK charity that supports people who’ve been widowed before their 51st birthday
About us
WAY aims to support young widowed men and women as they adjust to life after the death of their partner – whether that was a month, a year, or ten years ago. The charity was founded in 1997 and now has more than 4,600 members across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We have a members-only area on our website where people can chat on forums in a safe and understanding environment. We also have lively social groups that meet up throughout the year – for drinks, meals out, walks and picnics. We organise weekends away for adults and families, go camping, have parties and offer an alternative social life that does not revolve around couples. All our groups are run by volunteers who are WAY members, which means everyone you meet in WAY will understand something about what you’ve been through. Despite our grief, WAY members do know how to laugh and have fun. Supporting each other is a great way to learn to live again after the trauma of watching a loved one die.

Trunk Logistics Head of Operations, Jake Bedding, is running 1/2 a marathon to raise money for WAY Widowed and Young to support friends and loved ones who lost their partners too soon. Trunk Logistics’ Managing Director, Jo Sedley-Burke, lost her wife, Paula, in 2018 and joined WAY as a member in the same year, then went onto join the board in 2021. WAY is a fantastic charity who provides peer-to-peer emotional and practical support for those aged 50 and under who have tragically lost their partners too young. If you would like to support Jake and contribute to our goal, donating through Just Giving is quick and easy! Any amount is greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small🐘💙 https://lnkd.in/eFtzySz4 📞0330 998 8282 ✉️info@trunklogistics.com 🌐www.trunklogistics.com #Charity #Donation #Donate #Fundraiser #Fundraising #Marathon #Marathon #Removals #RelocationServices #StorageSolutions

"I'm nearly six years out now and I think I can laugh at some of those things now and that's what the movie highlighted for me - hope." In 2017, at the age of 46, Andrew Byles was left to raise his two teenage children alone after the death of their mother, Julie. Julie's death had left the family not only in deep grief but also in financial hardship, so Andrew reached out to Citizens Advice (CAB) for help. However, his claim for bereavement benefits was denied because he and Julie were not legally married at the time of her death. It took until February 2023 for the law to change, however, payments were only able to be backdated from 30 August 2018. Seeking further justice, CAB connected Andrew with Leigh Day solicitors, who believed the case was strong enough to take to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). “When my claim for Bereavement Support Payment was rejected, I felt angry. It was hard to understand why an injustice like this could take place." In September 2022, WAY member Daniel won a landmark High Court victory that could help dozens more widowed people claim Bereavement Support Payments in future. The High Court ruled that it is a breach of human rights to deny Bereavement Support Payment (BSP) to surviving families of people who could not work because of life-long disability. Although the Court of Appeal ruled in Daniel’s favour, this was overturned and a Supreme Court hearing is pending over the next two days.
