We’re at Bletchley Park, the once-secret home of code-breaking during World War II, standing by the Veteran Stories exhibition to share updates on our #MovetheNeedle project with Alces Flight and Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) . Since launching the project, members of our #HPC community have come forward to share their experiences and innovative ideas on advancing #EDIA. We’ve had contributions from Nages Sieslack from ISC High Performance, Ludovic Capelli from EPCC, and many others who have shared valuable insights. Our knowledge portal houses all the information gathered on EDIA for the computing community. A clear mission is key! In our recent #MoveTheNeedle interview, Marion Weinzierl & Jeremy Cohen discuss how defining purpose and vision fuels volunteer orgs. Aligned goals and accountability help prevent scope creep and drive impact. More: https://lnkd.in/eaSE3pcC #HPC #EDI #WHPC #STEM #EDIA
Defining Purpose and Vision: The Blueprint for a Strong Volunteer Organisation At the heart of every successful volunteer organisation is a clear and compelling mission. In our latest Move the Needle project interview with Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC), Marion Weinzierl and Jeremy Cohen highlight that a well-defined purpose and vision are crucial for guiding efforts and aligning everyone toward common goals. A strong mission statement unites members around a shared objective and provides direction for all activities. But a clear purpose alone isn’t enough, you also need a strategic plan to achieve it. This includes setting specific goals, establishing accountability, and regularly reviewing progress to keep the community on track. Avoiding “scope creep,” where focus drifts from the original mission, is essential for sustaining momentum and building a resilient, impactful organisation. Understanding the diverse ways individuals and institutions operate allows for tailored approaches, ensuring smoother collaboration and more effective outcomes. With a clear purpose, a well-thought-out plan, and a commitment to your vision, your volunteer organisation can thrive and make a lasting difference. Delighted (and surprised) to have been recognised as one of HPCwire’s inaugural “35 Legends of HPC” for my role in co-founding and growing Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) from a small UK-based advocacy group into an international force for change. None of this would have been possible with the ongoing support and friendship of a whole range of individuals and organisations. In particular, I’d like to call out my co-founder Toni Collis Ph.D., Executive Coach, all the amazing women and men on the Executive and Steering Committees, the Chapter leaders and the sponsors. Thanks are also due to EPCC for their unfailing stewardship and support, and to EPSRC, PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), STFC and STFC Hartree Centre for their backing. This is an honour for the countless women and men who continue to change our community’s behaviours and beliefs for the better. The last 20 years have been awesome, here’s to the next 20 years! #hpcwire #sc24 #whpc #EDI
