Mental Health First Aider Training Course: I am really pleased to have completed my refresher course today with the MHFA England. The online live training on zoom with a professional clinical psychologic and experienced trainer was amazing. It is really good to see some of the changes that have occurred in this training and in Mental Health in the last three years. Great Reaction from a Mum with her Toddler yesterday👏 I was outside the supermarket in the park when I saw a toddler running away from her mum and nearing the private road with a car reversing towards her. The Mum started to run towards the child but she was 12-15 meters away. I also made a move towards the child as I was very near, though I was conscious not to frighten her. Thankfully the child stopped before stepping onto the road, her mum arrived and took her in her arms. Then her Mum said the best thing to her: 'Well-done for listening' whilst comforting her. Now that's a really nice, helpful, and safe reaction that also acts as positive reinforcement of behaviour 👍. This will do so much more than panic screaming and fear sharing, whilst reinforcing safety rules in addition. Charade: Who Am I? I am not my thoughts, I am not my emotions, and I am not my body either? Who I am? The awareness that knows might be the answer that Jon Kabat Zinn, -the eminent Mindfulness teacher, trainer and writer - would give to this charade. When seated in Meditation, the one that knows that we are thinking about something else than the point of attention is the awareness. Bestselling author, life coach, and sociologist Martha Beck calls it the Essential Self, this third party that sits behind our emotions and thoughts and is able to witness the battle between different threads of our beings. In situations when we feel tormented and are trying our best to make the right decision, she advises to sit in the discomfort, and let yourself be guided by the next step, which might be to do nothing at all, but to bathe in the awareness and acceptance of our conflicting thoughts and emotions. Getting Back to Yoga in Primary Schools I was back in our local Infant School this Monday teaching a lovely group of Y1s and Y2s. I know the Y2s already and it is so lovely to see them back. Having this good relationship with some of the children already is a great way to model expectations for the newbies. To celebrate this season of change, I chose a short but brilliant Poem by Daniel Thompson called 'Share Your Feelings' that we could act out in a short dynamic Yoga Sequence. I first asked the children if anyone wanted to share how they felt coming back to school, and we worked with 3 adjectives:'Happy', 'Excited', and 'Nervous'. I was so grateful to the child who ventured the word 'Nervous' as all feelings and emotions are welcome: they are messages that give us information as to what we are going through and how we are going through it. I too, feel this anticipation and mixed feeling prior to going back to work! We should not underestimate, brush off and under, the energy and courage that it takes to embrace the new school year. Change of School Anxiety? How Yoga Can Help As the end of the school year approaches, I like to address ‘Change of School’ as an important topic of reflection in my Children Yoga classes (ranging Y1 to Y6, so covering 2 big school changes, but also moving up to a new class, change of routines and teachers). I tell the story (all in Yoga poses of course) of a little girl whose family has just moved house from a flat.... I will keep the suspense as to what she finds there but this is a super story to talk about -the stories that run up our minds -how our brains wanders to find explanations to mysteries -the rising anxiety leading to not thinking about anything else (the mind shrinks literally) -it is okay to be scared of new environment and big changes: very natural indeed! -how we can become aware, and accepting of the story, and trust that it can pass. -talk to trusting carers and parents to gain explanations https://lnkd.in/e6sdEQbV By discussing how our character feels, and acting it out in our poses, finding a calming breath, talking to each other about it, we are truly making yoga experiential and rehearsing scenarios that children are facing at the end of school and ahead of September.
