As we’re located in a rural area, with several of our occupiers spanning across the agri-tech industry, we stay up to date with the latest agricultural industry news. Recent figures showed that confidence in the stability and future of farming is at an all time low. This is why the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced a new deal for farmers to boost Britain’s food security and drive rural economic growth. Sometimes the hardest words to say are the most important. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and we’re standing with Samaritans to support its mission to destigmatise conversations about difficult feelings and suicidal thoughts. A recent poll showed that only 45% of people feel comfortable talking to family and friends about suicidal thoughts, compared to 74% who feel comfortable talking about mental health. By talking more openly about suicide, we can give people the chance to express how they feel and get the support they need. Labskin tested the microbiomes of two participants skin, to identify the bacteria present and provide guidance on the best courses of treatment. 🐝Did you see the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) in the Express recently? 🐝 Investigators from the National Bee Unit, part of APHA, are asking the UK public to keep watch for Asian Hornets. The deadly insects first appeared in the UK in 2016 pose an extreme threat to pollinators, with one hive of hornets consuming up to 11 kilos of insects each year – 40% of which are honeybees. It has taken 1,350 sq ft of laboratory space, where it will produce detection bioreagents that are consumables for its wide range of testing equipment. 🔬 Labskin Limited creates human skin equivalent models that are used by skincare, cosmetics, ingredient manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies as part of their research processes. Labskin occupies a total of 1,800 sq ft across three laboratories onsite. We talk a lot about our occupiers and the fantastic work they do on campus, but it takes a lot of moving parts to keep a science campus up and running. Thankfully, we have the support of a brilliant team from 14forty, our facilities management services provider, who help us with important daily tasks. This includes all of our soft services, like front of house and reception, event support, security, porterage, cleaning and ground maintenance. In our last ‘Get to Know’, we spoke to Dan Sykes, AMBCI our YBC Facilities Manager  who oversees the contract for soft and hard services taking place onsite. This time we spoke to Rob Read, our Facilities Manager who supports Dan by delivering the soft services, to learn a bit more about how all of these pieces fit together to keep YBC in top shape! Figures shared by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs show that confidence amongst farmers is at an all time low. The government has announced its commitment to introducing a new deal for farmers to address the low confidence in the industry and to provide stability for the farming sector. Defra has shared that the new deal will include… 🚜 Optimise Environmental Land Management schemes to produce the right outcomes for all farmers 🚜Seek a new veterinary agreement with the EU 🚜Protect farmers from being undercut by low welfare and low standards in trade deals 🚜Use the government’s purchasing power to back British produce Other plans include setting up a new British Infrastructure Council to encourage private investment in rural areas, speeding up the building of flood defences and introducing a land-use framework which balances long-term food security and nature recovery.
