  • Everyone has a role to play in addressing the biodiversity crisis. It is estimated that we need $1 trillion a year in finance to protect and restore biodiversity globally. 80% of this is going to come from the private sector. Collaborations between investors, conservationists and organizations are key to that develop and implement projects across the word. From developing bonds that help boost southern white rhino numbers to working with financial institutions looking to bring biodiversity into their decision making, we’re engaging with the private sector to help everyone be part of the journey to build a world where nature can thrive. • As we continue to make our conservation Zoos more inclusive for both our visitors and our staff and volunteers, we're pleased to share our upcoming on-site activities celebrating both Sukkot and Diwali, over the coming weeks. In recent years, we have marked Christmas, Easter, Chinese New Year, Pride, and Holi. We are excited to explore other inclusive activities to mark the cultural moments important to others in the local community, and ensure that our Zoos are places where people from all backgrounds and communities can get closer to wildlife. https://lnkd.in/eMphVgHP

  • Aquatic ecosystems cover around 71 per cent of the earth’s surface 🌎 But over half of coral reefs have already been lost. These precious ecosystems play a vital role in climate regulations and nutrient cycling, and urgent action is needed to protect them and the species that call them home. We work across the globe to restore marine habitats: 🎣 In Wales, we’re working with fishers and underwater cameras to study the elusive sharks, skates and rays that live under the waters. 🧴 In the Atlantic Ocean, we’re collecting plastic pollution to understand it’s impacts on marine wildlife. 🐳 Meanwhile, our Cetacean Strandings Investigation Team work to collect data from stranded whales, dolphins, sharks, seals and marine turtles to understand the threats these animals face. • In July, our scientists, in collaboration with York University, published a paper highlighting the need for a unified approach to tackle both climate change and biodiversity loss. The paper, featured in the Journal of Applied Ecology, stresses that addressing these issues separately could lead to progress in one area causing setbacks in the other. Co-authored by Nathalie Pettorelli and Idil Boran, it suggests that global leaders should create a joint plan between the UN climate and biodiversity conventions to ensure a more coordinated effort to solve these intertwined crises. In the coming weeks, world leaders will meet at major UN conferences on climate change and biodiversity, presenting a perfect opportunity to align their efforts. We are calling for this integrated approach, showing how projects like restoring mangrove forests not only fight climate change but also protect endangered species and support local communities. It’s time for leaders to prioritize nature in their decision-making, ensuring a future where people and the planet can thrive together. https://lnkd.in/eVzqmKHM

  • With the doors of #COP16 nature talks about to open in Colombia, how are things looking on policy progress towards nature targets agreed at the last talks?🌎 Years of inaction mean the new Government has inherited a lot of work to do, with most of the targets seeing no or even backwards progress👎 We’re calling for the UK to turn things around & show leadership for nature on the global stage🌱 This means unveiling new actions to restore nature in the UK🌳 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eP-DSjq2

  • Every week, an area of tropical rainforest the size of London vanishes due to deforestation – a key driver for both biodiversity loss and climate change. Although they cover only 6% of the Earth’s surface, tropical forests play a vital role in regulating the climate and providing a home for countless species, as well of the millions of people that live in and around them. From helping investors eliminate deforestation from their portfolios to assessing traceability and transparency in the timber and pulp sector, we working to help protect these vital habitats. • We’re delighted to have contributed to the brand new National Hedgehog Conservation Strategy, led by People's Trust for Endangered Species and British Hedgehog Preservation Society . The strategy aims to unify and strengthen existing efforts, as well as address key threats to hedgehogs. The strategy has been created in response to trends highlighted in the State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report, also published by PTES & BHPS, which revealed that native hedgehogs have declined by between 30-75% in rural areas since 2000.
