  • Are employees still in the driver’s seat? Or have the power dynamics in the hiring process shifted? The results of our recent polls of over 8,500 people reveal a significant shift in the hiring power dynamics. In the post-pandemic hiring frenzy, organisations were bending over backwards to attract talent. Fast forward to today, and cost pressures have shifted the landscape. Major corporations have laid off thousands, and public sector hiring is slowing down. Even graduate recruitment and internships at big names are seeing cuts. When we asked people from entry to intermediate level to share their take, here's what they said: ⇨ 68% believe employers hold more power. ⇨ 17% feel the power is balanced. ⇨ Only 14% think candidates are in control. Similarly, among potential hiring managers through to the executive level: ⇨ 72% believe employers have the upper hand. ⇨ 15% see a balanced power dynamic. ⇨ 12% think candidates hold more power. These results highlight a critical change in the job market at a global level. However, this is not always the case if we zoom into specific scenarios. 1% of poll commenters shared a nuanced take, pointing out that other significant forces are at play: 💬 It would depend on the country's unemployment rate. 💬 In Tech, the candidate rules. The employers might be in the driving seat, but their tech people start the vehicle. 💬 If you are a highly skilled and experienced candidate, there are probably multiple companies waiting with an offer. This highlights that employers should always be cautious about becoming complacent. Our additional poll results of asking why candidates withdraw from application processes show that: ⇨ 61% pulled out because it was too lengthy. ⇨ 18% found the process too complex and withdrew. ⇨ Only 18% have never withdrawn from an application process. These stats serve as a warning. Even though employers hold more power, a cumbersome hiring process can deter top talent. So here’s our take... 1️⃣ Focus on long-term quality With more control, you need to prioritise finding candidates who align with your company’s values and goals. 2️⃣ Enhance your employer brand Even in a market where you hold more power, maintaining a strong employer brand is crucial to attract top talent. 3️⃣ Maintain process transparency Clear communication about the recruitment process will help attract the right fit, avoid candidates withdrawing, and reduce time-to-hire and costs.
