BBC Studios says game shows are flying, as new formats pay off Seemingly against the grain of social media-driven viewing habits, game shows and quiz shows are on the ascendency among audiences, according to a BBC Studios presentation at MIPCOM Cannes this week. Faultline was drawn to the findings following our participation in a game show at the recent #IBC 2024, courtesy of Ateliere Technologies (we are told the footage should be released in December). #TV #tvshows #broadcasting

ALRIGHT, so the reason I looked like I'd been drop kicked through a Christmas market two months early is because we're proper chuffed about announcing the launch of our first festive event 🤶 Episode #3 of The Bristol Media and Entertainment Mixer introduces The Big Wrap Up on December 5th, brought to you by the collective eggnogs at Faultline and 5V Video | Certified B Corp™ 🎄 We'll be wrapping up 2024's most significant events in the M&E realm, covering the obligatory stuff like disruptive OTT product launches and streaming trends, but also the less-debated topics like the criticality of diversity and inclusion (or lack of), as well diving into the skills gap (uncharted territory for me). So there's something for everyone 🗺️ TBH I am slightly concerned that I'm moderating THREE panels back-to-back, so with our free bar expect things to get wavy by the third speaker session 🍺. In another first, we're also dipping our toes into the awards world, because you all know how much I love awards (NAB 2023 Product of the Year right here). FIVE lucky winners will be announced on the day, hopefully not by me because I'll be too drunk to open an envelope by that point 🏆 This is gonna be mega - sign up below 📺 Big Bristol love to our sponsors so far: Bitmovin, Harmonic, MediaKind, Rise, Bubble Agency, Women in Streaming Media

Veritone reappears as AI-based video surveillance tool Veritone first blipped onto Faultline’s radar in 2019, pitched as the world’s first developer of a dedicated OS for artificial intelligence systems, equipping TV and radio broadcasters with native AI-led analytics capabilities to increase incremental advertising revenues. Veritone was early to the AI arms race—too early perhaps, having struggled to transcend its AI OS status in the era of generative AI for media, with the company since reinventing itself several times over. #AI #video #videosurveillance

Ultra-low latency standard-based HTTP coming to life In the past, we have seen various ultra-low latency offerings. We would describe these as “far below broadcast delay, capable of supporting betting applications, and not too far behind social networks.” We have also observed WebRTC-based delivery evolving towards IETF WebTransport, HESP promoted by TheoPlayer (now part of Dolby Laboratories), and more recently, Media over QUIC (MoQ), which is still at the proof-of-concept stage but gaining strong industry momentum. Channel 4 dragged from dark ages, scrapping in-house strategy British broadcaster Channel 4 is playing catch-up with the local streaming competition, executing a long-overdue upheaval of its OTT video infrastructure – switching out a swathe of in-house systems in place of new third-party platform-based technologies. This comes after Channel 4 reported a sizable revenue decline of over £120 million ($156 million) in 2023, triggering the company’s largest round of lay-offs in 15 years. MediaKind moves into Multiview territory Reacting quickly to demand for new features from IBC 2024, TV infrastructure vendor MediaKind has added Multiview functionality to its portfolio of video processing and delivery tools – opting for a third-party vendor to deliver the necessary multifaceted technology rather than developing it in-house. That third-party is Skreens, a SaaS production environment provider which Faultline has covered only once before, back in 2021 following a guest appearance from Skreens on the old SRT Tuesdays webinar series. #multiview #TV #video #technology

Would you sit through a fully AI-generated podcast? Introducing the ménage à trois, as Polly and Steve have their take on Faultline's take on stories including Apple's first immersive original movie, plus Backlight's bloated portfolio and IBC updates. My new co-hosts are definitely more enthusiastic than I... must figure out a way to train that shit out of them.

Meta’s $10k AR glasses offer escape plan from Apple-Google grip Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has long resented Facebook being kept at arm’s length in the mobile era. Apple and Google have been careful to prevent the various Facebook applications becoming too entrenched into the core iOS and Android experience, for fear of becoming simply the dumb pipe, and Zuckerberg has not forgotten this. The much maligned rebrand to Meta, to signify the company’s focus on the metaverse opportunity, signaled the clear desire to create the next computing platform. Facebook had surged to the fore in Web 1.0, but the mobile-centric Web 2.0 had seen the core platforms conspicuously move against Zuckerberg, and so the creation and proliferation of the next big thing in consumer electronics has existential stakes, in the CEO’s view at least. #metaverse #AR #orionglasses
