We are looking forward to welcoming Lorna Griffin-Hannan from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust Conservation Trust as one of our speakers at our upcoming Green Planet Design Conference. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust work across the UK inspiring everyone to help wild bumblebees survive and thrive. The UK has lost 97% of our wildflower-rich meadows since the 1930s and this has had a big impact on bumblebees and other pollinators. Pollinators are essential for maintaining a healthy ecosystem and in turn, our food chain and economy. Without bumblebees, we could soon face our own crisis. Lorna as Senior Partnerships Officer at the Trust collaborates with organisations across the UK, helping them meet sustainability targets and support biodiversity. If you would like to hear her insights, join us at the Green Planet Design Conference in Preston on the 24th September. Register Here: https://lnkd.in/eXBDbne7 📅 Date: 24th September 2024 🕥 Time: 10:30 AM - 3:00 PM 📍 Location: Brockholes Nature Reserve, Preston New Rd, Preston PR5 0AG 🍽️ Lunch provided

The winner of the ‘Newbies’ category in this year’s Allotment Challenge is Team ‘Watering Wednesdays’. Mitie Landscapes client, BAE Systems Christchurch, allocated a plot of land earlier in the year to be developed into an allotment for everyone to enjoy. Mitie’s Site Services Manager, Tracey Harvard, has been managing the allotment alongside Ellie Rogers from BAE. The judging panel was particularly impressed by the efforts to boost biodiversity including an upcycled bughouse, hedgehog habitats, and mini wildflower areas. The team grew a variety of produce, including strawberries which were used to top cream teas on ‘Armed Forces Day’ in June. Which was a great way of getting people engaged. “Our allotment has opened opportunities for staff members to meet others in an outdoor environment. It’s a great way to spend time with nature, and we are able to encourage, observe, and enjoy wildlife,” said Tracey from Mitie Landscapes. “This has become an area I visit daily; I do not get involved in the planting, etc., but I find it a very calming space. It helps me step away from my desk and sit and admire all the goodness,” said a BAE staff member. The team will be receiving £250 worth of gardening equipment to help their allotment grow! If you are interested in getting involved in next year’s allotment challenge and would like to be kept informed, drop an email to sustainable.landscapes@mitie.com. #NationalAllotmentWeek #biodiversity

It’s time to announce the winners of the first Mitie Landscapes Allotment Challenge! First up, Congratulations to Nick and Sharon McCaffrey who have won the ‘Old Hands’ category. Nick is a Strategic Account Manager at Mitie and started his allotment 3 years ago with wife Sharon. They have taken inspiration from Tom and Barbara from The Good Life and are making the most of their plot! The judging panel were impressed by the range and quality of the produce and the relatively short time in which the plot has been transformed. They particularly liked the sustainable and wildlife-friendly features, including dead and decaying wood, composting of plant material, and a wildlife pond made using a re-purposed bath. Nick and Sharon will be receiving £250 worth of gardening equipment to help with the allotment effort. Stay tuned for the winner of the 'newbies' category. We recently partnered with Ashdown Phillips to create a rooftop community allotment, for building users and local wildlife at One Bartholomew, London. Here’s what we did: 🌱 Revamped existing planters: We redesigned the four large existing wooden planters, adding wooden walkways for safe access and filling them with fresh soil and a variety of herbs and vegetable seeds. 🐝Added new planters: Twelve new planters were installed around the space, filled with bee-friendly plants to attract pollinators and create a relaxing environment. ✂️Official opening: Ashdown Phillips and Mitie Landscapes hosted an official opening with a hessian ribbon cutting ceremony. We handed out hampers with gloves and seed bags, and spent time with tenants, encouraging them to plant additional herbs and get involved. The allotment is now part of our maintenance contract at One Bartholomew Close, and we’re excited to see it flourish! #AllotmentWeek #CommunityGarden #SustainableLiving #MitieLandscapes #AshdownPhillips #UrbanGreenSpaces #BeeFriendly #GardeningCommunity 🌱🏙️🌼

Back in April, we encouraged our customers to sign up for the Mitie Landscapes Allotment Challenge 2024. After months of hard work from our participants, it’s time for the judging! Our Head of Natural Environment Don and our Managing Director Tim will be choosing a winner who will be announced late this week. The Challenge is to mark National Allotment week. The theme for this year’s week is celebrating biodiversity, a topic close to our hearts at Mitie Landscapes. Allotments will be judged sustainable and wildlife friendly features like water conservation or re-used materials as well a quality of produce. #NationalAllotmentWeek #biodiversity
