In an upcoming documentary, Netflix will uncover the ugly truth behind our insatiable relationship with mass consumption. In the past six years alone, we have consumed almost the equivalent amount of material (582 billion tonnes) as we did in the entire 20th century - 740 billion tonnes. This is a stark reminder that we must take action to protect our planet. Whether that’s by having honest and difficult conversations, forging powerful partnerships or spearheading novel solutions. With Black Friday and Christmas fast approaching, this documentary couldn’t come at a more critical time to inspire change in the industry: https://lnkd.in/gSdjKdk6

Earlier this year Jen Keane, Founder of Modern Synthesis and Nicolaj Reffstrup, Founder of Ganni A/S took to the stage at Rethinking Materials. We are excited to see the trajectory of their collaboration as they pave the way for novel innovations in the industry 🧪👜
For those who hit snooze on Friday morning, here’s what you missed: Modern Synthesis featured on BBC Breakfast as part of their explainer on engineering biology! 🧬 It was an honour to welcome the BBC crew back into our lab for visit of the UK's Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Dame Angela McLean, who remarked, “we are seeing the beginning of a big revolution” – I may be slightly biased, but we couldn’t agree more. 💪 🦠 Here’s a clip of the feature showing our materials and Modern Synthesis x GANNI handbag in all their glory. A huge thank you to everyone on the ModSynth and BBC teams who helped make it happen!

22 prominent CEOs whose companies are members of the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty have signed an open letter to heads of state ahead of the final round of negotiations in Busan, Republic of Korea, for a legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution. The letter outlines the specific measures on which agreement is needed at INC-5 for business to implement an effective treaty: 🌍 Global criteria and lists that enable the restriction and phase out of chemicals of concern as well as problematic and avoidable plastic products. 📑 Sector-specific approaches and global criteria for circular product design of plastic products, such as packaging. ✅ Common definitions and key principles for the effective implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes. ⏳ A strong mandate for the governing body to strengthen the agreement over time.
